Hello fellow bizarrists!

I just wanted to share a trick that I really like. I've never seen anyone else doing it, but it is a commercially available effect called The Crystal Ball.

Here is the way I do it:

I begin by talking about a mysterious crystal ball I own. It was given to me by my late grandfather, and it's unusual because instead of being clear, it is black. Instead of being smooth, it is rough.

I bring out a small, black leather bag, open it, and pour out the contents...nothing. "I forgot to mention, this crystal ball does strange things. It goes through time. It changes from two-dimensional to three-dimensional. It can even find something in a crowd. Let me show you what I mean."

I bring out a deck of cards and say I only use them because they are a bunch of similar objects which are marked differently. I casually show them and have a person select any card. I bring out a Sharpie and have them sign their name across the card so everyone can see it, including me. Then the card is lost in the deck which is mixed, squared, and placed on the table.

Then I go through a mime with the person who chose the card and have them hold the ball and feel how heavy it is. Finally they place it onto the back of the deck and press it down into the deck.

I spread the cards, face down, and now one card in the middle has a huge circular spot on its back. I turn the card over and it is their signed card.

Now, I hold the single, signed card over the table and order the sphere to become three dimensional. Suddenly, a large sold black ball drops out of the back of the card.

I give the card back to the person who signed it. The spot on the back of the card is gone.

Easy to do. Resets in seconds. Required intermediate ability with cards and balls. Works better if you can "sell" the effect.

Sounds like a perfect story vehicle for a yarn from Stevenson's Treasure Island--black spot, etc.

I suspect it will take good "selling" and presentation, though, because the method seems--from this brief description--to be a bit obvious.
