We just made a batch of bargain tables and the size is 18x24. Without hesitation I chose 18x24.
I use a larger size sometimes 22x26 but the smaller size is just fine. This is what 18x24 looks like with cards for perspective. Definitely big enough for a cups and balls routine.

Take a piece of cardboard and perform your routine on it. Begin cutting it down and performing the routine. At some point you should be able to figure out that you have discovered the correct size tabletop needed to perform the routine. Now using that size cardboard as a temporary top, try the rest of the things you do to make sure you don't really need a larger space on which to work. I always recommend going with the smallest size that works for you just because you have to lug it around with you.

I agree.
I learned to adjust exact placment of cups during my routine, mostly toward the end of the routine, to utilize the space available. It's nice to have extra space but when you can use a smaller footprint and lug something around that is far smaller, it does make a difference.

Nick Nickolas once posted his table size below and reasons.
I think I have one of the smallest out there. 12inches by 20 inches 2 reasons for this, 1: smaller/lighter better for traveling. 2: smaller means final loads fill up the space making them look bigger. |

I think I have one of the larger ones out there, 2 feet by 3 feet hardwood surface. Reasons:
1: I wanted to put my hat out on the table during the entire routine to ABC (always be closing) so I wanted a wider table. 2: I like the sound of cups hitting the hardwood to attract attention, and I can dry it with a towel if it rains. I also have the lowest table, barely over 2 feet tall. I use a TV stand from Wal-Mart at a base. I like it lower cause kids can approach it - dad does not want to stand there holding a kid so they can see. -JoeJoe
