A pk ring, which magnetic field you can activate and de-activate at any time.
Is this reality or a pipe-dream? What's your opinion on this? http://www.world-of-magic.co.uk/Neomagne......9043.asp |

Really nice idea. I just wonder how it will stand up to real-life use, and how easy it is to activate and de-activate.
I would definitely be interested, but I want to read some reviews first. :bat: |

I'm curious about the magnetic strength given that it's made from steel, rather than the actual magnet. The durability of it certainly is intriguing.
As for the "activating/deactivating" I wonder if that's the best/most accurate term? I don't know exactly what they are referring to, but I have a ring which is polarized through the diameter of the ring, rather than along the width of the band itself. This has the benefit of allowing you to switch poles, as well as switching between a weaker pull and a stronger one. Based on whether you twisted the ring so that the poles were pointing up and down/perpendicular to your hand, or parallel, essentially "deactivating" the ring; or at least not having the strongest part(s) of it facing the same direction as your palm and back of your hand, thus helping to limit (though not eliminate) the amount of unwanted attraction. The demonstration in the video with the spoon, where they are implying the ring is "off," it looks like it could be still "sticking" to the ring a bit, which would be consistent with the diameter polarization of the ring I have. Not to "expose" anything here, this is all just info on rings available through magnet sites. I believe I got mine from supermagnetman. That said, it is still made from the actual magnet, rather than steel as this one apparently is, so I'm not suggesting it as an alternative. The steel factor of this ring, if the strength is still comparable, then that will be a HUGE benefit.

It's a little bit misleading to say that it is activated and deactivated. It implies that there is some clever technology going on when it's just a stainless steel ring with a magnet embedded in it.

So, Sean, I guess that the "activation" occurs by twisting it around on your finger, right?
It's annoying to stick to things accidentally, but I'm not sure that twisting it around is good enough for me. :bat: |

For $35 forget it, it is probably just what the previous posters said.
I have been working with an electronics friend on a ring which can actually switch on and off. Problem is with electromagnets strength is not up to permanent magnets. While keeping the ring a sensible size, this is a problem. So far with a fairly large sovereign style ring, the round part holding the electromagnet and batteries, we got barely a 1 gram let/pull. This would be enough to hold a shimmed card, nothing else really. Not coins of any decent size/weight. Maybe we should sell it as a palming helper? |

Thanks for all of the info guys.
I was interested, but now I know that it's not for me. Magicians helping magicians! :bat: |

I think you turn it on just by turning it around. A magnet just on one side.

There were rings sold that had exactly those features decades ago, long before the "modern" pk ring fad. The only thing this would be adding is that it is in a plain band style ring. Not that that's not worth anything, just the rest is nothing new.

Sounds like a good idea, although thinking back I don't ever remember thinking I wish I could turn this ring off, so not sure if I could justify the price. Perhaps useful for some folk

Anyone actually have one of these? I'm very interested in it for it's apparent durability. I constantly lose my pk rings to cracking and such, I'm just concerned about magnet strength.

It's made from stainless steel so it's very durable. Nowhere near as powerful as wizard rings though that's not necessarily bad, now is it

Any similar item that shares the same function? I'd love to get one of these but even Neomagnetic Rings don't come into smaller size than 19 mm.
How to get in touch with Leo Smetsers the creator?

I had this ring (and lost it, nothing to do with the ring!) and it's a good product but with a few small downsides. It's extremely tough which was very important for me, as I've cracked loads of other PK rings. I've dropped this ring on concrete and it's had barely a scratch, so if it's a bullet proof PK ring you're after then I can't recommend this highly enough.
The other plus point to this ring is that you can "deactivate" the magnet should it get in the way of another effect, or if you need to prove it's not a magnet should it be called out by a know-it-all. As I mentioned the ring does have a few small downsides, firstly I think saying the magnet can be activated/deactivated is over selling it a bit. You simply spin it round. The other issue I had with the ring is the magnet is clearly visible, maybe not to the spectator when you're wearing it but you certainly can't hand it out. The plus side is this makes the magnet easy to locate but if a ring could be made where the magnet was undetectable to the eye, then I'd be inline to buy it. It's also quite a wide ring, slightly wider than I'd have liked but I assume this is to ensure a powerful enough magnet can be accommodated. I've lost a few rings in my time, most of them to drains when I'm rolling them as I'm walk - a bad habit! So the question is would I buy it again? You know what, I think I would. I'm going to try some dirt cheap PK rings first to see how they fare, as I could lose 10 of them for the price of one of these. If the cheapo rings are crap (which they likely are) then I'm going to order another Neo Magnetic ring and try and be a bit more careful this time. It's also worth mentioning that I wanted a ring I could perform other effects with, so this ring might not have been the perfect fit for me. If you just want a PK ring that's exceedingly tough and where you can have control over where the magnet is placed, then this is surely the best option out there. |
