I noticed that Richard Osterlind's "Mind Mysteries" series have good reviews, so I've been giving some thought in maybe purchasing a few. However, I've noticed that his volumes come in both DVD and Guide Book form.
Personally, I tend to like books better than DVDs, so I'm thinking of purchasing one or more of Osterlind's guide books. However, I'm not sure if the guide books are meant as stand-alone books, or meant only to supplement the DVDs. I realize that I'll probably get the most benefit using both the DVD and the guide book, but if I were to use only the guide book, could I still learn the material well? In other words, am I making a useless purchase if I buy the guide book without the corresponding DVD? Likewise, are the DVDs still good material even without the guide books? I'd like to know if either is still a good investment without the other. (It's not that I'm opposed to buying the DVD; it's just that I'd prefer the book first, and then maybe later consider the DVD.) I appreciate your input. Thanks! |

I belive the guide books are only meant to expand upon the DVDs, your best bet would to get the DVDs first

For sure you would need the DVD's before the guide books. The guide books are fantastic and a great supplement to the DVD's, but you'd be lost relying only on the guidebooks.

Hi J-L Sparrow,
The Dvd's contain the performances and tutorials of Mr Osterlind's effects. His guide books are not the instructions but merely expansions on the ideas and subtleties. The books are pretty much useless to you unless you have watched the and digested the material in the DVD's. My advice is to buy the set first, watch it, digest it, perform what you like from it and if you feel you want more from certain effects buy whichever guidebook corresponds to the effects you are particularly interested in. Best, John. |

The guidebooks are supplements to the DVDs. My friend has all of the guidebooks, and if I remember correctly, the methods are not shared in the guidebooks.
Bobby p.s. My friend loves the books.

As others have said the dvds contain the routines and explanations - I bought the dvds when they came out - they are very good. I also bought the guide books when they came out - they are an excellent addition and go over the material in more detail and add a lot - but as has also been said they are not stand alone. Its probably good to think of them as the 'bonus audio track' on the dvds but in book form. I thnk osterlind really provided a good deal in creating the dvds and guide books togetehr they cover a lot of material and are a master class in the material which osterlind teaches. My personal recommendation would be to get the dvds fromt he series that your intrested in. if you like them then get the guide books that go with them. Treat it like a course in entalism and study the material closely there is a huge amount of information and experience contained in them.
Hope that helps. |

Thanks for all the responses. They clarify my question nicely!
Just another quick question, though: Earlier this year I learned about Osterlind's Breakthrough Card System (BCS). I ordered the 20th Anniversary edition of the Osterlind Breakthrough Card System; I learned it, and loved it. (I particularly enjoyed the "Test Condition Card Trick.") Now, I see that Mind Mysteries Volume 2 is about the Breakthrough Card System. Since I already have the 20th anniversary text of the BCS, is it worth it to me to get the Mind Mysteries Volume 2 DVD (and guide book)? Or is much of the material the same? |

I think it's still worth getting the DVD, J-L. There are some other effects on the DVD, as well as the opportunity to see a visual presentation of the material in the BCS book. The Corinda effect is a great one!
The companion book is also worth getting as it is one of the few places where you can see Richard's poker deal effect using the BCS stack. Also a great effect. Off the top of my head, I don't think the poker deal is on the DVD or in the BCS book. |

Richard is one of the greatest mental performers of all times. I saw him 30+ years ago and again recently. His material, all of it, is useable! You can pick up the videos from L&L cheaply when they have promotions. If you ever get the chance to go to one of his lectures, GO!

I think so too. If you REALLY liked the BCS and found it very useful I would buy the DVD set as it pays to see the stuff performed.
Best, John. |

Thanks to all for all your advice. I went ahead and ordered both the DVD and the Guidebook (of Volume 2).

You won't regret your purchase if you like to use his BCS. I use it all the time now and have come up with my own presentations using it. His material, to me, is all good.

I would get the BCS DVD. I got BCS some time ago along with several other books on stacks but it wasn't until I saw Richard perform effects with the BCS that I really appreciated just how powerful it can be.

Why are you not allowed to join any magic/mental circles? And what is your understand of what mentalism and "mind reading" are?

I think it is safe to say that if Richard Osterlind puts something out it will be of value. There may be some overlap in his videos but you always learn something that could take your understanding of the routine to a new level.
