Hocus Pocus Magic Shop is promoting a new prediction effect by Scott Alexander called Message In A Bottle (MIB). The price is steep, but the routine is intriguing. It is in the pre-release stage and Hocus Pocus is offering a discount for pre-orders. I am wondering if anyone on the Café might know more than what the add says or have they seen an actual performance of the MIB routine.

Scott Alexander is also offering a sale on the routine, MIB or Message In A Bottle. This is a metal effect to reveal 3 random answers to the questions asked the audience minutes previously. This follows the Confabulation effect by the late Alan Shaxon. Totally different method, but same presentation outline, if you know what I mean.

I heard how this works and was completely blown away. Absolutely nothing like the method I imagined it would be.

Like the concept but a little hesitant about the bag. Looks like you could do away with the bottle and just pull the prediction from the bag if you wanted. I of course don't know, but that's what crossed my mind.

I clearly see what is going on here, which I think is pretty snazzy. But, I just don't like the bottle leaving view no matter how well justified it is. The fact that it's a one person effect is great though. Scott Alexander puts out solid material. It's just my hang up I suppose.

I agree with you sbays and have the same concerns. But both these guys are very creative and come up with real workers solutions. Just not quite sold as yet.

If you think you have the method figured out, you are wrong. Trust me. The paper bag and bottle are completely ungimmicked. According to Scott, you can do away with bottle and bag and produce the scroll however you want.

I think I see what is going on here. And if I am right, then this is about the most ingenious thing I have seen in a while! If not, then I have just invented the most ingenious thing I have seen in a while!
The method (if I am right) to get the live info onto the scroll is where the value is in this release. Just Brilliant! |

I certainly have not got it figured out, I just don't like the bag side of the effect. Good to hear you can produce the scroll from anywhere or anything. The typical Alexander ingenuity is it being a one person set up and how the info is transferred. Getting more interested now.

Spoken to these guys about this since I've been a repeat customer. The pricing is because the gimmick is a mechanical marvel. This is like when magic apparatus were beautifully made, quite ingenious, Tommy Wonder type stuff. Will be giving this some serious thought.

I truly don't believe the specs will care about the bag. They might even get an additional theatrical/emotional thrill from the breaking of the glass.
We all see this through our own filters, but my subjectivity says that the bag's not a big deal and that it won't lead back to a solution. The vid is intentionally quick but it looked like the bottle lid was attached to the scroll that comes out of the bag; this is another strong throw-off. Yes/no?
Like Bonnie Raitt said, "I miss Little Feat more than I miss being 8 years old." Thanks for the concerts + recordings, Lowell, Richie, and Paul!

Turns out I was half right about what I thought. As it turns out, it is better than I thought. Which is a pleasant surprise. It still nags me just a bit that the bottle goes into the bag out of sight for a moment, but not enough rule this out. Now knowing what's going on, this is a winner guys. And all a one man show. I'll be getting this.
