This trick was part of a routine on the Johnny Carson show years ago.. Easily seen on the internet sources. Nothing magic about it, just simple physics. BUT it plays big! Looks impossible, but is probably the easiest trick I do. Five eggs drop into 5 glasses of water when a lipped circulat tray is knocked out from under the eggs with a broom. Dramatic!
You can get a tray and glasses ( I prefer clear mugs as they are heavier ) I also use a rubbery no-skid sheet under the glasses on top of the card table. Why risy anything moving. I used plastic easter eggs to practice with, bringing each up to the weight of a real egg by adding quarters inside. Really didn't need to do this, as the trick has never failed! This, coming frm someone who can screw up a ball and vase trick. I suppose there are instructions somewhere on how to do this trick, but it is easy to figure out. One suggestion...on the You Tube, it shows DeLuise pushing the broom to hit the edge of the tray. I found that it works fine just be letting go of the handle. I trust no one thnks I am revealing some big magic secret here. Ive taken the IBM oath. BUT you can see exactly how to do it at several sites where the Johnny Carson show segment is shown. There is really no trick to it. Everyone ( almost) sees how it is done, but the effect plays big. I closed a recent show with it, and even a magician friend present was impressed. It's all in the presentation and the gags. No secret... s |

It actually goes back further than him. There is no secret. It is more akin to juggling than to magic. Still a killer routine.
That is the thing with juggling. No secret. All out there. Just varying amounts of skill.

Akin to the old pulling the tablecloth from a set table "trick."
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Which brings us back to the old question of what is more important, the trick or he presentation. Not hard to answer that one. Even a five year old can figure out what the trick is in making the Statue of Liberty disappear. What a struggle to make that one go over! All tricks like that HAVE is the presentation.
Yeah, pulling the table cloth out from under a set table is always fun, especially when the magi does it and the stuff scatters all over the floor. Everyone KNEW what was going to happen, and when the gag took place, you can bet the audience will remember and laugh about it ten years down the line., especially if it is followed up by a real baffler just to assure the audience that the magician is not really a bumbling idiot and that he was just playing them along. I haven't tried that yet, but have seen it done, and it really makes the show memorable. A little rubber cement under the place settings? |

Flattery will get you nowhere. My reason for being here is to explore various facets of the craft, as I have no other magicians nearby. I am not really interested in what the best color silks should be in a square circle. My contributions to the forum may be few, feeble, and far between but it is a small price to pay for associating with people who know what they are doing.

The rubber cement under the cloth being pulled makes no sense whatsoever.
Just saying you might not have thought it all the way through, that statement...

If not rubber cement between the tableware and the tablecloth, what would you suggest to assure it all came off with tablecloth? The effect is for a laugh. If you yank the cloth out without disturbing anything, you've just performed a hackneyed old trick..

I have read that Malini used to close his show with this stunt. I have also seen Ricky Jay do this stunt on TV.
