One lot are slightly sad, nerdy people, usually loners with poor social skills, who compulsively collect obscure information and obsess over the minutiae of said information. The other lot spot trains. I'll get my coat. |

I think that, with the recent interest Mr Brown has provoked in the subject, there has been an influx of 'hobby-mentalists' who collect every e-book and DVD on the subject...but never perform. It seems the classics of our art, from Annemann, Corinda, Cassidy et al, are ignored or deemed 'outdated' by those who seek to find methods that are almost as magical as the effects themselves; NLP-based tricks, for example. |

Its an english phrase, its the stereotype that people who's hobby it is to collect and spot different trains are usually very socially inept, boring, nerdy, and just write stuff down in a little notepad and steer clear of girls and so on...

Just watch the movie trainspotting, it portrays the life of an average trainspotter in Glasgow Scotland very well. Good sound track too ;-)

Much to do about nothing lads...
It has always been like this. When I was a kid a long time ago magic kits became very popular (My pop got me a Remco magic set one Christmas). Before my time, Tarbell had his course that was mailed to your house in weekly installments. As far as I can see, everything that has occurred in the last 75 years has only gone on to increase the popularity of magic. And, believe it or not, the same is true of mentalism. I'm willing to bet good money that there are more full time mentalists working now than ever before. There is a flaw in the way that most of us think. The amount of people digging for the secrets to our craft are miniscule. And, they don't ruin one *** thing. This is what everyone forgets: You are a mentalist second and an entertainer first. What we should all be concentrating on is the quality of our performance. Further more, if you give a show and members of the audience scramble to fire up Google when they get home, then you have not done your job. Magicians do tricks which are puzzles to be solved. The magician says (mistakenly, I might add) "I have an ordinary deck of cards." Mentalists read minds. They don't use gaffed cards or books. There is no secret to suss out. That is why I can blow someone's mind with a piece of paper and pencil (don't need electronic gadgets, audience doesn't know the difference anyway). The mentalist says, "I have a deck of cards." Why? BECAUSE IT'S NOT A TRICK! So, there you have it. It's been like this since the first audience paid to watch a magician perform. People have been doing exposes forever and people attend magic, mentalism and hypnosis shows in record numbers. People don't care how. They just want to be entertained.
