I received their clatter box Deluxe. Being the most expensive clatter box out there I thought I was getting a real gem. The design of this item is very poor. Putting this into my show was very embarrassing and not in a good way.
Firstly, the box comes apart too easily when you don't want it to and doesn't fall apart when you need it to. When the volunteer opens the front of the box it starts to break apart prematurely. This is because the handle is fixed solid to the top of the box. Opening the normal door cause the box to start spreading apart and the pieces come loose. I had to resemble the box on stage. The handle on top needs to pivot. Secondly, the box is not very deceptive. It is obvious from the back of the audience that only half the box can be seen. The insides needs to be painted black. Thirdly, the trip mechanism takes too long of a pull to engage. It takes at 2 to 3 inches of movement. It should only take half an inch. Both my only performances with this box had my volunteers stopping before the box falls apart. They start to pull the knob and can tell something is wrong so they stop pulling. In both shows I had to pull the knob myself. I went back to the India version and couldn't be happier. |

I just wish they would give me a refund. Instead they say they'll redesign it. I don't feel like being a guinea pig.
I'll report back and tell how the redesign goes. |

Have you talked directly to Harry Allan? He's usually pretty good to work with. You might get further with him than with one of the store sales people.

I did. I actually got further with someone named Joe. I called three times. The first time Harry talked me out of a refund and said they would try to redesign it. Not wanting to use my time or money for R&D, I called back and Joe offered a refund. I sent it back to them and then I got a call from Harry telling me no refund was available. I can see them fixing the first two issues but the third is going to take a major overhaul.

Is a metal one? Or wood?
It just proves it's not easy build something that it SUPPOSED to fall apart? ¿ |

Hate to hear that about Harry. He'll usually stand behind his products. Wonder if he purchased a bum lot and couldn't get his money back either, so he's trying to pawn them off on others?
No matter the reason, to me, it's poor business. Mark. |

John, it is the wooden one. I agree Mark. They build these themselves. I just don't think they ever tried using one of these in a show or with a real volunteer. I'm probably the first sucker to buy such a high priced clatter box.

I just saw the youtube video for the Clatter Box. It is a hilarious effect. But isn't there a potential for the assistant/volunteer getting scared or upset that he/she broke something valuable?
How does it play in real life? |

Hagerman, it is to bad you got a piece of junk. They do make their own stuff as noted on the site, and looking at just the pictures of most of the items they do not look professionally made.
I suggest you get the $50 dollar one, as it looks like it is made just like the Jack Hugh's original design. The other one looks okay as well. That $50 one is $70 on most other websites. http://www.daytonamagic.com/clatter-box-......01b.html http://www.daytonamagic.com/clatter-box-......74b.html The one Hagerman purchased: http://www.daytonamagic.com/clatter-box-......52a.html Harry is difficult to work with, the other owner Irving Cook is much better to talk to. I suggest you get one of the others and get a credit for other props if they will do that. I can't believe they will not stand behind their own products. If something the manufacturer's fault they should return you money. Mak Magic had a nice aluminum metal one that actually worked and it was big, but a quick look shows they do not list is again. They had them remade once and I guess they sold them all. Here read this, it tells who is who and their policies. http://www.daytonamagic.com/about-us.html |

I agree with Bill. Try talking to Irv Cook. From their "about us" policy, right below Irv's "signature" is the following...
---------------- OUR LOYALTY IS TO OUR CUSTOMERS. You are the people who are the most important to us. We will always try our best to satisfy you. The workmanship of all our apparatus is always guaranteed. We will gladly replace a defective item. Our return policy prohibits you from sending anything without an authorization. Call first for return authorization. ---------------- With that said, maybe follow Bills suggestion and see if you can get a credit for the "defective" box on the purchase of another one. Mark. |

Caféinst: I've never had a problem with anyone being upset. I only use boys of 10 years of age or higher. Then I let them off the hook as they return to their seat. I love the routine.

So here's my update. I revceive the box back yesterday and they did abosolutly nothing to fix the problems.
I called Irv today and he hung up on me because he was telling me I should have called him like a gentleman before posting this revue. Keep in mind that I had all ready been in contact with Daytona Magic three times! When Harry accused me of lieing about Joe promising me a refund, I decided to write this review. Now it is obvious Irv is not a gentleman either because he didn't want to hear about my converstions with Harry - he hung up on me when I asked him to stop interupting me. He even accused me of drilling extra holes in the box in which I did not! I did take the screws out of one side to removed that side so I could ship it back cheaper, in a smaller box. (Like I want to spend even more money on this garbage.) When I pulled the screws out and removed the side, it can be seen the the builder messed up on his original drilling and drilled holes in the wrong spot - only to redrill the holes in the right spots (The holes are hidden by a hinge and cannot be seen when assembled.) So Harry accused my of lieing and Irv accused me of drilling extra holes. This is a terrible company to buy magic from! For the record, in my recent call, Toby told me personally that she and Joe both believed I deserved a refund. A video review is soon to come! |

Wow!!! That is TERRIBLE service from both Harry and Irv. Let this be a lesson to others about Daytona Magic if this is how they treat customers and handle problems with their own builds.
You might file a complaint with the Daytona, FL - Better Business Bureau, not that anyone checks with them, but you never know. What a let down!! Mark. |

Thank you for your support Mark. It is obvious that Daytona Magic does not stand by their guarantee. I will be contacting the BBB. I feel completly taken advantage of by Irv and Harry of Daytona Magic.

John, do you have their deluxe version? I've replaced mine with one from India and with the new one I have no complaints.

Ouch. That's hugely disappointing to know about Daytona Magic. Changes happening there?

After hearing this, along with a number of bad experiences from other past customers, I WON'T be doing any business with Daytona Magic!! I plan to tell others about it as well and suggest they look elsewhere.
There are just too many GOOD magic companies to do business with who are appreciative of their customers than to waste time and money with Daytona. Mark. |
