I have an old copy of Genii (September 1997) which has a cover story about the Napoleons, a Japanese team slightly similar to Penn and Teller.

The article gives their names as Bona Ueki and Parte Koishi. Now I have limited understanding of Japanese, but I know "Bona" and "Parte" aren't Japanese names. They're obviously the stage names these two have come up with from the real Napoleon's last name. Since the names aren't given with quotes around the stage names, I thought at first that the article writer actually thought those might be their names.

Then going through the FISM story in another Genii (April 1997) I see that they appeared at the FISM convention held in 1988 (They won third place for Grand Illusion) and their names were STIL listed as Bona Ueki and Parte Koishi. So I have to wonder if they don't use their last names in their pubicity and the article writers only had the stage names to go by.

I never see quotes around, for instance, "Jonathan Pendragon."
"Torture doesn't work" lol
Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

But Jonathan Pendragon's stage name is not used in conjunction with his real name as is the case with the Napoleons

Try posting at the Genii forum, and I bet you'll get a quick and likely correct answer. Smile

Maybe quotes are used when the real name is included, but not when isn't, e.g.

1) Magic Johnson; or
2) Earvin "Magic" Johnson

I've never seen quotes used around stage names, except in a few cases where a performer was playing a one-off role but is widely known by his real name. Houdini wasn't written as "Houdini" nor was Harry Blackstone written as "Blackstone," nor David as "Copperfield."

And if I'm talking about Benjamin Kubelsky, I don't write "Jack Benny."

Again, the real names aren't being used in conjunction with the stage name. In the case of the Napoleons, their first names are used in conjunction with their stage names. (I think those are their first names, last names in Japanese usually have more syllables.)

I think it's likely that "The Napoleons" is the stage name of the team, and Bona Ueki and Parte Koish are the stage names of the individuals.

OK, took me awhile.

I don't follow sports, but Magic Johnson has made himself an icon. The Napoleons were unknown for the most part when they were spotlighted in Genii.

I'm certain, early in his career, the reporters referred to Earvin "Magic" Johnson until he became an icon.

(And if my name was "Earvin," I'd want to be known by my nickname as well.)

I just saw a commercial where he popped up and said; "Hi! I'm Earvin Magic Johnson." So maybe he's tired of people thinking his parents actually named him "Magic."
