Hello
In about 2 months (maybe a bit more), the freshman ball is coming up at our university and one of my friends is on the organizer team. Actually, he is one of my flatmates and he knows that I practice magic a lot, I also regularly show him stuff. He asked me if I wanted to be a "side attraction" at the party, and I don't know if I should take this opportunity, because I don't really have an act. I wouldn't get money, but free entry for the event and maybe some drinks. The event looks like this: There are two big halls for the bands and for dancing, and in the smaller classrooms there are a variety of side attractions like karaoke, video games, quiz games.. I'd be in one of the these rooms. I could get a table probably and I should entertain people between 8pm and midnight or so. The audience is full of halfdrunk students, so that'd make things easier. My magic situation: I have been studying (mainly) card magic for 4-5 years. I learnt effects, I forgot some, because I didn't really script them or made notes on them. In other words, I am not Michael Skinner! My skill level with cards is mid level, with other things pretty minimal. The plan: I am thinking in terms of putting together some 25 minutes long table show, which I would repeat again and again. Is this a good idea? I would script and rehearse this for good now. I also think I need some stand-up pieces, like two different routines of 3-3 tricks, to get crowds coming in, or to show random people who stop me to perform for them. For the table show my plans are: - some kind of opener (Skinner monte ??) - a dice + cards routine: Coincidice by Doug Conn (needs full deck setup), 2 in hands 1 in pocket with the dice, maybe the Sachs die routine - color changing flash drives (Flash by Chad Long, routine by Bill Malone) - Mental Photography deck (routine by Bill Malone), then a deck switch for blanks - a coins + cards routine: David Williamson's coins through mat, then Schneider's Matrix, then Evening the odds by Doug Conn - closer: ambitious card with a logical card to wallet ending, maybe some byplay with the Sharpie when they sign the card This should amount up to 20-25 minutes I think. The two stand-up sets would be: 1) Leipzig's opener, some kind of in the hand triumph, sponges 2) Parts from David Williamson's Cocktail Dazzler, coin levitation maybe some Bill Tricks. This is my plan. I fooled around with these tricks a lot, but never made them into a coherent routine. Do you think this can be pulled off in 2 months? Thanks in advance

I don't see any reason why not if you've been practicing magic for 4 or 5 years it should be no problem by now you should know you're abilities, just work it out, know what you're going to say and if you make a mistake just move on and act like it didn't happen. and have fun! wishing you best of luck I'll be rooting for you!

Your topic does involve cards so I think you're fine.

2 months to go? You'll do fine! Frankvomit's advice of 'playing through' a mistake is very worthwhile for musicians as well as magicians. And by all means, have fun! Also rooting for you! Lynn

Be prepared to wing it. Your set sounds good, but be ready to improvise. Put in some real simple stuff. Best of luck to ya. Trois
Not clever enough to come up with something orginal, or did I.

I wouldn't open with something that is gaffed. Do something quick that establishes that the magic comes from YOU, not your props. I think if you open with the Skinner Monte and then put the cards in your pocket, it looks like you have something to hide. (You do.) BUT, if you do something that's not gaffed, and just set it on the table and they CAN grab it as you are getting your next prop out, it's all the better.
Good luck. |
