Bah! No, it doesn't BEG the question, it RAISES the question.

Sorry, it's become a pet peeve, of course it's a loosing battle on my part. Meanings change with colloquial use.
It's amazing, people will criticize you for "biting the hand that feeds you," while they're busy praising the hand that beats them.

I'm with you on "begging the question"! Unfortunately, I also agree we're never going to see the end of that one.

Now, about "lose" and "loose"...

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

"Loose" written when "lose" is intended drives me crazy.

It seems that almost everyone uses "begging the question" incorrectly nowadays. It does NOT mean "raises the question." Basically, it means assuming a fact not in evidence, as in "When did you stop beating your wife?"

Words mean whatever the speaker intends them to mean.
If you doubt me ask a man of color about the word *****.

I guess you agree with Lewis Carroll's Humpty Dumpty, then:

Quote:
'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.'

-Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass

If words mean "whatever the speaker intends them to mean," meaningful communication would be impossible - exactly the point Carroll was satirically making.

You can enjoy your pet peeve and I'll continue to enjoy begging the question. And as Lobo and MMR so aptly noted, you sir, should learn the difference between loose and lose.

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

Obviously not as many here, including you, knew exactly what I meant. Thanks for proving my point!

Your participation was needed as well, by understanding me.

To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln (reportedly), if you call a tail a leg, a horse still has four legs. Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it one, nor does it change the meaning of the word.

I think that was originally a riddle that Lincoln liked to ask:

"If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a horse have?"

"Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it one."

Left or Right Wing? The way I see it is, when they are both being flapped by the same bird, what's the difference?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.
