I'm thinking of switching to the Prius...I'm getting killed at the pump with my 4Runner. I'd love to hear some real world opinions if anyone drives one!

I shoulda bought one sooner! I can get close to 400 miles on a tank of gasoline; fill-ups average $30 to $32 of regular gasoline per month (this is the Prius Personna, the model in between the 3 & 4 series, Hybrid, not the full electric one). Previously owned a BMW 3, used premium fuel at a rate of $60 - $65 per week!
Depends if you need a lot of power and still need to impress folks ....... then the Prius ain't for you, for me I'm well past that, especially when I can save $200 + per month on gas! Best, BWind |

How big a gas tank? What I am asking is miles per gallon.
I have a friend with one and swears by it. He could not be happier.

My fill-ups are usually 8 gals. ($30-$32) or slightly less, the tank's capacity is slightly more than 11 gals. (400 miles is obtainable). With reasonable driving & traffic conditions averages 40 - 50 mpg (if you're not "heavy-footed"), and yes I watch those fancy controls making sure I'm not overly using the gas engine; the traction motor is really the gas saver;
Note I believe with the 2012 models, Toyota switched to the new gel batteries (much more compact & is currently warranted to 100,000 miles, 150,000 miles end of life cycle). Upgraded / changed the technology of the total hybrid system. When the computer toggles from gas engine to battery power or for extra power w/gas engine + battery power, the transition is smooth and seamless. One special note: the new Ford Focus Hybrid (nice car!)is actually using the old Toyota technology which was purchased a couple of years ago. Just don't get into any head on crashes with a jumbo SUV, Buses or a Semi Best, BWind |

Had a first generation Prius some time back as a rental. Spent first hour driving looking at cool display showing energy going from brakes to battery to wheels and gas kicking in. Kinda freaky stopping at a light and hearing nothing...makes you think car stalled. I've test driven newer versions and likely get one next car purchase.

I love driving an SUV (I'm an American after all) and ultimately would love one of the Lexus RX hybrids, but it looks like the mileage on those isn't a whole lot better, considering the price difference. I haven't looked much into the technology and where things are headed with hybrids, but at the moment I'm not up for dropping 50 grand on something that's still going to be that pricey at the pump. I drive about 40 miles a day, city driving.
I'm going to test drive one tonight and ask some questions, but it's always better to get opinions from actual drivers versus the dealer. The only negative I've heard thus far is that they have some bad blind spots.

Andrew-
I drove a Prius and loved it! I am over 6' tall and it fit me well. I got a little concerned with a close call, as it is a small car. Switched to a Camry which I loved. Needed more room so am now in a Lexus hybrid SUV. Still cannot approach the mileage of the Prius. It is a REALLY GOOD car... Jim

It's my wife's and she doesn't use it much so it's only got 55K original miles. Yes, it likes gas, but for our use on beaches and a second vehicle, I'd never part with it. I'll never be without an SUV and this will serve us well for years to come. At least in this lifetime. That said, as a primary vehicle, it doesn't work. As for the Prius, I have a friend who had one, and when a deer totaled it, he went for the Camry hybrid instead. Not sure about his reasons.

Ended up picking up the Prius last night. I traded my 4Runner in (it was a 2003 and it hit 150,000 yesterday morning.) I was sad to part with it because it's a GREAT car, but it was time...did some fierce (for me, anyway) negotiating on the trade in and ended up happy. It needed a lot of work done and now I don't have to worry about it. Now to get used to hybrid life...apps galore on the dashboard. It's like driving an iPhone with wheels.
Jim...how do you find that Lexus to be? As I said that's where I'd eventually like to end up, as I do enjoy being higher up when I'm driving (especially with all the morons on the road out here.)

I'm not a big fan of SUVs. Not going to go anywhere where I would need that kind of power. Being that there's 6 of us in the family, I would like a mini-van of some kind. A Prius isn't really in the cards unless it's to be a "second" car for me to drive around in.

I played the drums in a band for five years so the SUV was a necessity to get to and from gigs, and the towing package came in handy when we were on the road. Miss those days!

Keep us updated on how you grow into it Andrew. I have not seen anyone who drives one not be pretty happy with it.
Not a car for me, but it sure seems like a good thing. Hybrid tech is really moving forward. Cadillac makes a SUV hybrid don't they? Seems as if it will be the wave of the future.

I had a prius that I bought used for $7k before the gas crises a few years ago. It was good, great gas mileage. I had a wreck and totaled and I got a check for $12k from the insurance company. The price of used Prius's had skyrocketed once the gas crises hit.

I'll start a blog for you, Danny I will be interested to see where hybrid technology goes.
I spent 20 minutes in it playing around with some of the gizmos in the navigation system. I wonder if there's a community college class I could take or something.

Good on ya', Andrew! I think you will love the Prius.
As to the Lexus, it is really a dream car- from the dealer on down, just superb. Whether it is worth the money is a matter of opinion, I suppose, but I am at that point in life where is makes sense for me. The reality, though, is that cars today have so much to offer that it is hard to justify the extra cost of the "luxury" models. I am committed to the hybrid concept, but the Camry I traded in (for almost what I had paid for it) was a wonderful piece of transportation, and felt very "luxury" to me. I needed the carrying capacity of an SUV or wagon and couldn't find a Highlander hybrid, so I went for the Lexus. Now I park about 300 yards from where I want to go to "protect" my investment, so an exercise program is included at no extra charge...
