I will say that the women with which I hang are beautiful, brassy, and bold - all of them. I canNOT with 'girly girls' who turn everything they experience into a 90210-level drama explosion. They make me weary.

Clinton, I don't think your point sounds stupid at all - I'd even go a step further to say that the problem you've outlined isn't just with female magicians, though - it's with ALL magicians. If more magicians wore what they like and felt most comfortable/attractive in and carried that same sensibility to the material they chose and the way they presented it, we'd have a lot more variety, creativity, and individuality in magic in general - and that'd make it much more modern, relevant, and fun.

I don't need to see someone pulling silks from a tux unless it's what (s)he looooooves. I'd much rather see him (or her) do an original routine based on everyday items they use and know well in clothes he or she is proud to wear - bunny pajamas, torn up jeans, WHATEVER - coupled with music they found on some weird indie site that's just perfect for the point they're trying to make or message they're conveying with the act.

The audience can feel your joy when you let them. Why deny them that experience?

Interested in reading your thoughts.

Wow!
Wonderful!
No need to ask you your point of view. Very well said.

I think I will read this one again.

Have I mentioned that I have had a female student for over a year now?

I am hoping she will be a great cardician.

Thanks again for a great read.

I totally agree! These are younger women though, I believe. Maritess looks barely out of high school. Misty, I don't know how old you are, but you definitely should be a role model for these young-uns! I'm 57, still single (and glad of it!), and I don't tolerate "drama games" these women (girls) play today. Gettin' too old for it.

Misty, YOU should have wrote the article. I'm thinkin' it would have been TEN times the read! Smile

And now, after PM'ing with several members here, I am getting a sense here of what Maritess is about. Wow...some pretty low opinions of her. Her performance, her magic...now I realize...

Maritess ain't qualified to polish Misty Lee's SHOES! Let alone give her (lame) opinion of men in Magic. Apparently Maritess is not as young as she looks. That mentality though...it has NO place in magic. So...she goes in the pile. And just do ya know...Honey Boo Boo is in that pile...just sayin'...

And yeah...I can be a pig. I enjoy it. I have no problem with porn, or scantily clad women or my sick sense of humor. I do have to edit myself more. We live in this Politically Correct society, and I constantly throw a monkey wrench into that machine. I do that on purpose. Not to .piss people off. Just to show that being PC goes too far sometimes.

I am still single at 57. Now you know why...I had a field day with the Women's Liberation Movement so many years ago. One woman actually threatened my LIFE! I don't hate women. I hate what society has made them think today, though. Men are pigs. Women are uncomfortable. Ya can't even make a joke today.

So...now I've dropped a few points even with some of the MEN here! So be it. Hey, if we all agreed on everything, it would be a pretty boring place. I am the KING of bad taste! Hopefully it doesn't offend you. If it does, I apologize.

*smiles, wags a finger at Doug* Now now, Doug - please don't insult Maritess. Her article made me mad because, I felt, she missed some points and threw male magicians under the bus instead of taking charge of her own destiny.

While I appreciate your support, there's no reason to compare. All magicians are different, and some will appeal to your taste more than others. One article resonated more with your personal alignment. No big deal. If she's made some bad impressions with magicians along the way, that's between her and them. Discussing that will just derail the topic. Smile

Why there are fewer women in magic is probably a little less complicated than it seems. I think it's simply that the nature of the "hobby" doesn't attract women, just as playing poker doesn't. When you think about it, magic, sleight of hand, etc. might be considered a fairly technical activity and women are typically not attracted to such activities.

Having said that, the women I've met who were interested in card magic seemed quite capable of learning good sleight of hand.
I'd love to see more women participating. And, we should welcome them.

I would say the woman is a saint! Such a good heart. A loving, caring woman. Plus, she is a magician! Plus, she is beautiful, but that makes no difference. What DOES, is she is a PERFECT example of the female magician we long for.

I have never met a woman like her. She has made me laugh out loud, and shed tears. Very, VERY few women have done that. I'm a changed man. I don't know how she did it. God help us, I PRAY for more women like Misty Lee. A gem like that you treasure.

Those of you who know me, know I don't cry. I didn't even cry at my Dad's funeral. Misty turned the light on. Showed me a thing or two. I really had no idea. The tears just flowed. I am so glad I am alone tonight. I'm still wiping tears.

God richly BLESS that wonderful woman! I could never repay her kindness. She could have cast me aside like so many others have, but no. She made an effort. And for that, I am eternally grateful! Smile

I'm not a saint. I made an effort because you are worth it, Doug. The fact that YOU are now starting to see it too is payment enough - and makes me very happy.

So glad this happened in a public forum, 'cause maybe a female magician is creepin' and readin' and will see magicians aren't pigs at all - you're human beings who have a lot to offer when treated with clear boundaries, understanding, and a little kindness.

Magicians, for the most part, have always been very kind to me. That's why I 'mama bear'-ed out after reading Maritess's article. No way I'm lettin' you guys get blamed and dismissed that easy. You're far too awesome, and have probably had enough of that OUTSIDE of magic. Although I reserve the right to tease the hell out of you, it *does* in fact come from a place of love.

Am glad this ended up in such a positive, encouraging place. Thanks for hearing me out and for being so supportive, all. Need me? I'm around. Here's a link to the 'Women in Magic' article for the topic's sake:

Love to all you guys and gals - for real.

I enjoyed the article, don't necessarily agree with everything, and have no problem with the author being photographed in a bath tub.

I do disagree with the assertion (implied) that a roughly equal number of men and women (boys and girls usually) are getting into magic, but the women are dropping out after what they see while involved in the art. One would have to see numbers / data to really support that, and that is no easy feat. My guess is that there are a number of things at play that make it a male dominated art, up to and including the fact that gender domination in a field tends to feed on itself as the less represented gender have a lesser quantity of same gender role models in the field to inspire them.

Without any data to back me up, and completely shooting from the hip, it's possible that performing magic is more appealing to boys than girls. The reverse can be true in other fields. I have no idea why, but in my high school theatre class there were far more female participants than male. I just pulled out my high school yearbook and looked at the Concert Choir. 28 people total, only 4 of them male.

Perhaps men are more susceptible to the kinds of personality "issues" that make many of us attracted to the art in the first place (myself included).

And anyone who is getting their porno on tapes are way behind the times.

I thought the porn reference part seemed a little off from what I have seen...

"Male magicians openly traded pornos. Top-notch magicians proudly began their magic lecture notes with a picture of them with a porn star. Others illustrated their advanced magic books with photos of women in bikinis. It was hard to distinguish between their porn and their magic."

What?

Maybe this was her genuine experience but I have yet to see lecture notes using porn or women in bikini's.

We all know that sex sells - that is part of our general media environment today - both male and female.

But in magic - I don't know any "top notch magicians" using porn stars in lecture notes or otherwise. Weird.

Distibguising between their porn and their magic?

I don't get it sorry.

Is the magic community as a whole a sexist environment?

It is certainly a male dominated environment - without a doubt.

But the article overall doesn't back up her assertions with facts - and as Mindpro stated this seems a form of reverse sterotyping which is not helpful and comes off as a bit crass without anything to back it up.

Take a look at some old Paul Harris books, you'll find women in bikini's.

Lee Asher had a set of lecture notes "Sex Sells" that had photos of him with a few porn stars in it.

Its interesting that you will find far more female magicians in Asia than here. Maybe it's how it's marketed.

Richard Kaufman in a thread on the Genii forum had said "While there are many female magicians in Asia, there are far fewer in the US simply because toy stores in the US have never believed that parents would buy magic for girls, or that girls going into a store would ask for magic.

That is still true today.

So at the age when a magic set might trigger a life-long interest in magic for a boy, that opportunity isn't there for girls.

In Asia, there are magic clubs that expect a certain number of female members and the result is that there are a lot of female magicians in Asia."

For those who say there are no porn tapes traded at magic clubs or there are no major magic books or lecture notes illustrated with chicks in bikinis or porn stars--they lack in their basic magic history information. For those who think there is no porn exchanged at magic club meetings, they do not hang out in the inner circles of magic.

I will say that I have never seen any porn traded at any magic club meeting/convention I have ever attended. Honestly I have never had any friends male or otherwise that did so as well. It may be an anomaly with the magicians you were around?

The photo of Maritess on her own web site - nude in the bathtub covered in Tally Ho playing cards... was just extremely odd. Weird really.

Unless her web site has changed in the past few days, she is only photographed in very modest costuming. The link provided was not her web site.

Of interest is the fact that Maritess' content is unacceptable, but most would find no problem with this:

http://joaniespina.com/wp-content/upload......lude.jpg

from this effect:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2b4m3GXW0tM

Picture of female in bath tub: Bad.
Male magician having an implied 3 way: Acceptable.

Personally I see nothing wrong with either.

I don't agree with Maritess' premise in the article, but this thread itself is not devoid of a certain level of misogony.
