Kyle:
Strawberry's the way to go! Though, if you're giving it to the child (which I'd never do, either) the strawberry just adds another allergy headache. If I ever gave the sandwich out to the children--with my luck--I'd get the one kid with a strawberry AND a peanut allergy. Kid would swell up bigger than Violet in Willy Wonka.... But I do produce a sandwich at the end. It's the only way to cap it all off nicely. --Jon |

Phillip,
although I would not say PEE in my kids shows, just my opinion is all, I do like your creative thinking on this and thinking outside the box. It is refreshing to see others think outside the norm of how a trick usually goes. Kyle

Your thinking was dead on. It starts getting people to see outside of the obvious solution. Do not do the trick like everyone does it. Try to be unique and different and explore different avenues for the magic and the routine. This will not only fit your style better, but it becomes more unique and entertaining for your audiences.
It is just sad that too many of us do not take and put forth the effort to really think and be creative with their show. Kyle

I love Timothy Wenk's PB&J magic trick. However,
I would NEVER do the trick with REAL Peanut Butter. I am a former firefighter with EMT training, I just don't believe in taking changes with the life of a child who may not know that they have this allergy. Some children have a peanut allergy and the reaction can be fatal. “An accidental casual contact with peanuts, or even inhaling small amounts of peanut particles can cause a severe allergic reaction and even death for those who suffer from this condition.” Please check out this link” Peanut Allergy Can Be Deadly” at http://allergies.about.com/cs/peanuts/a/aa122898.htm Peanut Allergies in Children Have Doubled in Last Five Years http://allergies.about.com/cs/peanuts/a/blfaan120903.htm

This is another reason that if you are worried about this, you can adapt the PB and J to other objects and still have a great effect but just a different patter.

I introduce PB&J as a magician-in-trouble trick: "I have a whole table full of magic...oops, why is there bread here? And a lunch bag?! And who is Tommy? (name on bag) Is there a Tommy here? Hey wait a minute! My name is Tommy! Oh no, this is my lunch stuff!"
From here I introduce the peanut butter and the jelly on either side of the lunch bag. I offer to do magic with the PB&J. I then make them jump, forget to show audience, and make them jump back. The children yell out that they never saw the jump, so I offer to do it again. "I'll do it again, and this time I'll remember to show you. Hey, would it be a better magic if they jump all the way across the the room? I'll put the jelly all the way over here. Wait a minute: how about if when they go by, in mid-air, I make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for my lunch? Would that be a good magic?! Alright...I can do that...uh...I think I need a helper!" I pick a girl, introduce her, stand her betwixt my two tables. "You look really nice, Mary. I don't want you to get peanut butter and jelly all over you. I know: we'll use my lunch bag! (pick up bag, notice weight, look inside) "Uh-oh. Mary, have you ever forgotten to unpack your lunch bag after school? I did! Last week. Yuck: leftovers! (remove string of foam hotdogs) "Oh no! I had something else last week: noodles!" Here I invert bag and let a hat coil spin out onto the floor. After a few seconds, I grab a wand and and use it to whip up the coil. "I'm not eating this stuff! Yuck! Get outa there!" When the coil ends, I am left with the bag inverted in the left hand. My fingers are gripping a false bottom: piece of cardboard inside covered in paperbag paper. Under this is the prepared sandwich. Mary is given the two pieces of bread, holds them up for applause, and then gives them to me to put into the bag. Bread goes in; bread, cardboard, and sandwich are flipped; bag top is folded over. "Now we need someplace to put this, someplace everybody can see, someplace safe, someplace beautiful...on your head!" Bag goes on Mary's head with her holding folded top with each hand. Jars are covered, transpo completed. "Wait, wait...did your feel anything, Mary? Let's look. Reach in and pull it out. Open it up...wow! I really worked! Let's hear it for Mary!" (meanwhile I am holding the bag inverted.) No palming, Mary can look into the bag, reach into the bag, remove the sandwich, and you stand there at the end with bag inverted. After Mary shows off the sandwich, I have her drop it back into the bag so I can eat my lunch later. Very good reaction in school and library shows: teachers love the "Oops, didn't I show you?"; kids know all about lunch bags and leftovers; virtually all presentation. |

Goes to prove it is NOT the effect that makes anything entertaining. It is the performer and the performance that is given. Take them on a fun journey and they will thank you time and again. Kids love the journey more then the effect itself.
Also, if you are worried about allergies related to peanuts etc., always remember what the core part of the magic trick is that makes it magical. Then you really can change around every object to different objects and achieve a totally different presentation and routine. As the magician, you know the essence of the efffect is exactly the same, but to the audience, it is a totally new and different routine then before. It is a great way to adapt and customize many effects you may already have or own. Kyle
