The Beloit College Mindset List for the class of 2017 was released this week:
http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2017/ To give you a quick sample from the list, this year's college freshmen are too young to remember any more than 2 presidents, or a world without USB cables and ports. They also began crawling about the same time as news began crawling along the bottom of the TV screen. |

Kids today do not know what a 45 record is. Most have never seen a turntable, let alone know how to work one.
When my son was about 21 he was over at my house and I was listening to a vinyl lp. It started skipping and I asked him to fix the skip. He went over and pushed the needle all the way across the record! He said, I have no idea how this thing works. |

My hope is that kids today don't learn bigotry from their parents.

I'm afraid that is a human trait, not a learned one.

I totally disagree hatred of others is something that we are taught.

You love to use the word "hate," don't you Al. Why must you always bring these hateful thoughts of yours to any given thread?
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?

Studies on infants show that we are born with an innate sense of "us" versus "them". It is part of our evolutionary makeup. I believe one needs to learn to suppress their natural inclination and realize we are all one. And that is a learning process.

You sound like a man with a lot of guilt.

Hopefully they never forget that we are all here wanting to live a good life.
Each and every one of us. May the technology in our hands now pull us together, not push us apart.

Us versus them is not exactly what I would describe as bigotry. Self protection is not the same as hating fat, short, or people who look different.

I wonder if all the above BS is what the OP hoped for in starting this thread. Thanks to you Al, it has evolved to its present state of discussion.

I thought this thread was to make me feel old. Actually, I'm feeling pretty young around these warring old farts. Take it outside gentlemen.
I always get a kick out of lists like this. I suppose if you think about it, you can compile something similar for most generations. Just list things that became obsolete shortly before those in your generation were born. Of course with the speed at which technology develops these days, you can make an entirely new list every couple of years. The rate at which things are developed, used, and discarded in favor of something newer, is progressing at an ever-increasing rate... or so it appears. I got a real laugh at Slide's post above. I'd imagine kids these days, if you handed them a cassette tape and a pencil, most of them would write on the label.
