Hey!
I did my first stage performance of Mentalism on Friday night and it went very well! This was as a part of a really cool event at the university where I teach. This was an evening of "Words, Music, and Mentalism." The stage was a small music hall that seats about 250 and I'd say we had about 100 people in the audience. It began with three musicians playing some very cool ambient, acoustic music. After two short tunes, our creative writing professor came out and read a very creepy story from his book as the music continued. That took about 20 minutes. Then I came out and did a 20 minute routine with the musical accompaniment. Finally, a visiting poet came out and read poetry for about 30 minutes, again with the musicians playing. We had rehearsed several times with the musicians and they based their playing around our performances. The vibe of the show was slightly unsettling and exciting. I knew at least half the people in the audience (we live in a very small town) and they all know me as being funny and none of them knew what to expect. My character was somewhat jokey, but also commanding the stage, so people did laugh and were then even more surprised when each effect actually worked. It was terrifying, but moreso thrilling. Thanks for reading, friends. Sincerely, Jon Barr |

Nice one Jon.
Sounds like you had a great FIRST SHOW. It's a wonderful feeling isn't it. Performing mentalism is such a complex process. Thinking, thinking ahead, speaking, assessing your assistant, assessing the audience, performing the routine and so much more. The buzz is worth every second though. Well done, you'll be out there doing the next one in no time at all Derek |

Congrats, way to go Jon. But the poet was the closer of the show?

Thanks, David! Thanks, Derek!
It really did go better than I could have hoped. I have been on stage as a teacher, musician, and even as an actor. Those experiences helped to prepare me, but it's true that this required so much from me. And it was totally worth it. Based on previous suggestions I've seen on this page, I had a friend tape it and I'm going to analyze it for what I did well and what I can improve. Jon Barr |

Mindpro,
Yes, she was the closer. The event was really a chance to welcome her for her short residency at our university. By the way, she said she was terrified to follow me after the routine went so well, but her poetry was stunning and she had nothing to worry about. Jon Barr |

NOW I can officially welcome you to the club, Jon.
To really understand what we do requires that you've actually walked out on a stage and done it. Good job. Now mentally review everything you did, what got the best reactions and what needs to be revised or worked on. See what can be tightened up, etc. Do this after every show. It's a lot easier if you record all of them for that purpose. Good thoughts, Bob |

Congrats and well done on your first show. it will only get better the more you do, take Bobs advice and review every show you do and improve on it. I remember my first show, sitting there watching the dinosaurs walking by

Sincere thanks, all!
I will certainly review and constantly strive to improve. Thank you, Bob. I am still shocked that there is a place on the internet where beginners can receive advice and encouragement from legends. George, I hope that some day they discover the cave paintings that document your first performance. I'm sure it was amazing! Jon Barr |

Thanks again, all.
Watching the video. Finding lots of areas for improvement (and not just how fat I've gotten.) Here's my tip for the day: When you correctly reveal a participant's card, make sure the audience gets to see the card before you put it away. Ugh! Jon Barr |

LOL, good tip. I'm sure we've all been there. There are many 'Duh!' moments to be discovered
