What is your favorite way to persuade someone to accept your point of view?
If you don't have anything to say in terms of persuasion beyond merely stating your point of view, please refrain from posting or I will report to the mods for being off topic. I'm seeking seriously persuasive discussion only. |

Ethos, pathos and logos... though if it's dark it helps to light up a straw man or two.

I humbly acknowledge the greater generality of your demonstration.

One of the challenges is finding an argument (the logos part) where the audience gets to feel "right" about adopting the position without any pangs of being "wrong" for not doing so already

One excellent way is to simply refuse to allow people who might disagree to be permitted to participate in the discussion.
I am contemplating starting a thread titled "For those who agree with me only - others need not respond." That way I can create the illusion (in my own mind) of personal validation without having to consider what anyone else thinks. |

Soon all threads will be prefaced by "for people who agree with me only". I think that Bob1Dog has started a trend for exclusionary threads that will soon be outlawed.

Y'all are choosing to make this a huge issue, as I would have suspected.
The only reason for my opening statement in that gun thread is because it wasn't meant for discussion by folks like Al who would make every attempt to derail it and others who simply don't like guns. It's meant for serious discussion and as you can see it still is. If you have something appropriate to contribute, you're welcome to do so. So kindly cease from indicating otherwise. Now, if I haven't been pursuasive enough, the OP can simply report to the mods that I am off topic, and get me deleted. Simple as that. By the way, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Thanks!

Seems to me a good idea if it can be done. Staying on topic? What a concept.
Tho, it is those side tracks that invariably are the most interesting...how to off=shoot them? Like the old forums used to do?

1) Begin with a point of view that makes sense.
2) Gauge the level of controversy in your POV. The more radical, the softer your approach to convincing others must be. 3) If online, nurture a long list of friends who will likely back you up when you speak. Sometimes it is easier to accept something that you might otherwise resist if it comes from a friend, or when your credibility is validated. 4) If dealing with people in person, and if possible, feed them... preferably something unique and wonderful. 5) If you are wrong, admit it. The same people who won you over then may very well come to your side at another time when the conflict may have more meaning to you. If you walk away without admission, they may very well imagine pleasure in beating you down at the next opportunity. For the record (IMO)... sidetracking and derailing result from different motivations. Sidetracking is a pause to stop and smell the flowers. Derailing is stopping to throw rocks at a squirrel. Derailing a topic with the topic of derailing topics, is pure stupidity and a waste of everyone's time. Back to the game...

I've always felt that one of the profound challenges in life is how to explain to an illogical person that his or her logic is faulty.
