The “control freak” postings got me thinking about this.
When do you control the card? I have put much thought into this, actually. Many, many magicians control it almost immediately after the card is inserted; always. Eugene Burger comments that it is better to wait a little to do the control. I personally believe more in the idea of waiting, but it does depend on the control. If I am doing a control using a shuffle, I think it is better to do it right away, as if saying, “We put you card in and even shuffle to make sure it is good and lost.” This also flows well because I frequently have them insert it in as I pause in an overhand shuffle. It is just natural to do another quick shuffle to control it right then. If I am going to use some type of cutting sequence to control it, I generally wait a little, and casually cut while I am pattering. I also follow this with a few false cuts and shuffles as I talk, time permitting. (I think it is a great habit to continuously false cut and shuffle. I have often had people tell me that they are just amazed that I can keep track of a card while I do all that cutting and shuffling). I won’t even go into passes… Back to my original question: What do you all feel are the strengths and weaknesses of controlling a card right away or waiting? |

Hi GarretDN,
I like to controll the card in an offbeat and in such way, that no suspicion occurs. eg a pass in an offbeat, a turnover pass with the patter to show "that he could have picked any of these (face up) cards" ... I did also shuffle after the spec gave back the cards, but now (after reading Darwin Ortiz strong magic) it diverts from a fair handling and it make the spectator (in a more unconscious way) suspicious... So I prefer controls which are "invisible" .. or where the handling is motivated within the trick plot! Martin

The Cascade Control is great and instantaneous, but a glimpse and giving the spectator a deck to shuffle can send you a long way as well. Learn both.
