Has anyone had any experience with this piece? I am working out a new routine, that (in a comic effect) would involve an escape from a pillory or perhaps a guillotine (or a combo of both) I won't go into the premise here, but just curious if anyone has had experience with the Pillory - as the plans are available it might be one I can co-opt to fit my premise. Thanks!

What sort of info are you looking for? I have a Thayer model, and I have seen it performed by others.

With the routine I have in mind, I am curious on the timing of the escape, coverage and is it a manual escape or does it require the assistants assistance? Without details I know, just general. I'm looking at picking up the Osbourne plans. But not sure the pillory is the way I want to go or a guillotine instead, but I like the idea of a pillory for my act a little better. Cheers.

The Thayer style is a manual escape (you do it), but an assistant would be handy for covering you etc. Although I am sure 2 audience volunteers could handle it.

I will look into that one as well - still on the fence of whether I will go pillory or guillotine for the bit, but every ounce of info has sure helped! Thanks Blair.

I saw the "Le Grand David" show several times and they got a lot of mileage out of the routine with the pillory and had several bits of business. I would think a 3 escape routine would be good. ie. Wrist Tie or shackles, pillory, then sub trunk.
But I do think you will get more play with the guillotine though. Blair "ShaZzam!"

Thanks Blair - I was actually thinking of it being a multiple escape routine - all with comic effect. But I am thinking a giant blade adds the necessary drama - so may look at guillotines as well. I'm thinking perhaps of building a rather combination pillory guillotine - so it'd be standing instead of kneeling. Also the heft of the pillory is necessary for the other portion of the routine. Hmmm.... have to noodle this around a bit!

Have experience both building & performing the pillory. Used it as a straight escape and a substitution. Send a private message if interested in discussing.

Read: "Dramatique" by Tom Palmer in Tops Treasury of Illusions. You can buy this booklet for a few bucks at Abbott's.

Hello Blair....
Quick question. In your reference to the Thayer model, is that the model known as the Great Leon Pillary? Thanks. Michael |

This is the one I have, it's referred to as the Houdini Pillory. I will check out in the Cavenay Leon book what you are referring to. http://owenmagic.com/Escapes/escapes.html Blair

Hello Blair,
Thanks....yes....I'd be curious to hear more about the Leon Model. I have one (never actually used it) . It's clever but does require an assistant as far as I can tell. I'd be curious to know if anyone has done it without an assistant. All the best. Michael |

Below is Dayle Krall in the Leon Pillory that we use in our show
The Houdini Pillory is quicker to get out of than the Leon Pillory but the Leon Pillory is more baffling. We don't use both of them in the same show but they are nice to interchange! Richard Click here to view attached image. |

Hi Blair. How are you?
I built the Houdini Pillory and added the stand to the Leon Pillory. My research leads me to believe the Leon Pillory is an original. Richard |
