I've been taking a good long look at old plots and the means used to achieve the ends. One which stood out to me in particular was the general effect of there being one odd card in a deck that turned out to be the spectator's card either through a force or a stack or roughing fluid or God knows what else.
The goal I had in mind was to find a CLEAN, SIMPLE, and DIRECT way of performing that same effect that was also VERY EASY. After much deliberation and experimentation, I FINALLY came up with a method for doing just that! Here are just a few pros when using my method: >NO rough-and-smooth >NO force >NO unmotivated actions >Spectator can freely name ANY card >Cards are totally examinable at the effect's climax >Gimmick is smaller than a postage stamp and can be made with materials found at home >Has a kicker ending where the odd card's color changes to match the rest of the deck! I've tried it out on a few people and so far it's killed! I'd really appreciate it if you gave me some thoughts on the information I've just given you. Thanks so much! -Eric |

You are hinting method too much!
>NO rough-and-smooth Other material is used instead of R/S. >NO force Because the named card is shown as if it has odd back. >NO unmotivated actions Just cutting the deck to bring the odd card on the selection. >Spectator can freely name ANY card Because you have 52 normal cards. >Cards are totally examinable at the effect's climax Because it is one of the normal cards. >Gimmick is smaller than a postage stamp and can be made with materials found at home If it is too large, it is difficult to remove. >Has a kicker ending where the odd card's color changes to match the rest of the deck! This led me to the conclusion. I read the idea somewhere long ago. But I remember the card did not returned normal in that version. Hideo Kato |

So far I haven't found anything in what you're saying that's helpful, relevant or even correct. You say that my information "led you to the conclusion". What conclusion is that exactly? If you think you know what something is let me know through a PM, but please don't make useless and unnecessary comments in plain view. Thank you.

His thoughts, whether right or wrong, are worth more than most other people's thought's here. He's created a great deal of amazing magic. I also have an idea of what you might be doing, although I don't want to reveal my method in case it's different than what you're doing. I doubt my method is original. Good luck with your routine.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

Any chance of a short video demo of the effect?

Hello everyone!
After I posted in this thread 5 years and 7 months ago, I came back to Magic Café and found this thread revived. Recently I tend to value presentational framing than effects themselves. Of course effects must be good, but it is more important to connect effects in a good order in dramatizing a trick. In the effect the initial poster described, the back of named card changes color and then returns to original color. Is it a good connection that you change color and return the color to original? It can be a good connection if you can give a good patter or story. But it will be a mere showing of two effects if you don't give a good patter or story. As I re-read this thread again, I found a good (I think) presentaion for the effect as the initial poster posed. Let me explain it breefly. You shuffle the deck. A spectator name any card. You spread the cards in hands directing the faces towards audience, and up-jog a card. It is the named card. You pull out the card and place it face up on top of the face down deck. You patter "I think you like to know how I could find the card. Well, it is so easy that you can also find it by seeing back of the cards. Let's try". You You take the named card and insert it in middle of the deck directing its face towards the audience.(Until this moment you have not shown the back of the named card). You spread the cards directing back of the cards towards the audience and show that only one odd backed card is in the middle. You take it out, say "This is only odd-backed card, so it is easy to find the named card" and show its face. In this presentation, you should not return the back color to original. As this is an open thread, I am not explaing the method, but I think you can guess it. Maybe the gimmick the initial poster (and or I) hinted can be used in this presentation too. Hideo Kato |

Yes agreed. In any effect like this, you should never "change" the color back to original. That could be part of exposing the modus operandi of the effect.

I find it fitting that no one else bothered to reply after he ASKED for "thoughts" and then totally slammed the first person that provided some.

For that matter...does magic really need another card trick???

I think this effect, regardless of how it is done, can be a killer effect. I think Mr. Kato was really reacting more to the many things that were mentioned as not being HOW it was done. So by process of elimination, there were not that many methods left.
