Hello.
I have seen on a dealers site The Paul Fox Miracle Gimmick. The ad says: The paul fox Miracle Gimmick allows you to secretly discover the identity of ONE OR MORE "thought-of" cards! Use it for both close-up and stand-up performances. Can anyone give me some more info about it? This gimmick seems nice. Thanks |

It is a clever idea, however, it strikes me as perhaps a bit cumbersome in actual use.
I won't go into the method for obvious reasons, but here is how the EFFECT would look to the audience: The magi introduces a deck of cards and shuffles them. As 5 spectators are invited to join him on stage. The magi divides the deck between the participants who are asked to merely remember one of the 9 or 10 cards they are each holding. ALL the cards are then passed to the spectator on one end who shuffles them all together. The Magi takes the deck and fans them out reading off the first 12 or 15 cards. He asks if any of the spectators heard their cards. He asks those spectators to merely think about their card, which he then proceeds to name. The deck is shuffled and the process is repeated 2 or 3 more times until all of the cards have been revealed. I hope that helps. Perhaps, using a lie-detector framework, it could play quite strong. I may have to go back and look at it. It is worth getting as a study in method.

I have it, and bought it from Jeff Busby(!!) years ago.
I have never used it, and didn't even know that it still is on the market. My advise: Don't bother to get this. I'm sure that this was a sensation when Paul Fox did it. However, there are far better ways to impress your spectators even more, today. Without revealing too much, there is a gimmick. If you want to use the routine with jumbo cards, you have to buy another gimmick in addition to what you paid for in the first place. Sven

I recommend Barrie Richardson's excellent routine in Theater of the Mind. Also, Al Koran's Ten Card Mental Selection is highly performable. Both work on the same principle as the Paul Fox Miracle Gimmick, and the principle still works brilliantly. The ultimate exploration of this principle is Peter Tappan's The Impostress Princess.

One question. It is possible to use the gimmick one to one instead of several persons at the same time.
Thanks |

It's possible but very slow.

I completely disagree...it's a fabulous item, and it gets terrific audience play when I use it.
It is also terrific when used on the radio...not only is it dynamic, but will leave them in awe. I've closed many bookings with it one-on-one. All in how you present it, I guess. Brandon |

Simon Aronson's Histed Heisted routine is essentially the same effect and method, but adds a worthwhile envelope prediction kicker ending. It's in Bound to Please.

Reading Brandon's post I realized that I perhaps gave the impression that I also don't like the Paul Fox Miracle Gimmick. That isn't the case at all. I think the core effect and method is very good. There are, however, many variations on the same method that one should take a look at before deciding which routine to use.

The Richardson routine is called "It Isn't Mind Control." It starts on page 226 of Theater Of The Mind.
Also, if you can locate a copy, Irv Weiner's Miracle Princess Card Trick is exceptional. --Chris |

I agree on both accounts with Chris...the Richardson effect as well as taking a look at the routine with the Fox gimmick to decide what is or is not right for YOU.
There are many mentalists out there who have 'retired' the Fox gimmick or written it off as in-effective. But many out there also write off the NW or CT. Brandon |

The Impostress Princess book (mentioned above) includes many methods and alternative handlings for the trick.
The author's own favorite method, given in detail, requires no external gimmick and has several big moments at the end (which such an effect needs), including a prediction of the card one of the spectators would think of. It's very streamlined and gets the work done with minimum procedure. The whole book is a study in what happens when someone really delves into a single worthwhile effect and looks at it from every angle, then improves it. I'd really recommend it. Cheers, Jerry |

Danny Archer has a handling of this effect which does away with the gimmick. The gimmick is a memory aid. With work you can eliminate it entirely.

Henry Evans is marketing a version of the Paul Fox miracle gimmick called "MasterMind." The gimmick is cleverly hidden within one of the cards and can be handled by the spectators.
Steve Cohen opens his "Chamber Magic" performance with a version of this classic effect. TT |

I was a bit sorry I bought PF's MG for only one reason that I am already doing the effect with my own design cards I printed them up on double blank playing card stock.
This idea came to me some time ago in wanting to get away from playing cards, and it work brilliantly. regards Franklin - The Paranormalist |

Brandon, I am intrigued with your use of the Paul Fox gimmick on the radio. Could you elaborate? If it is too explicit for the public forum. PM me. I am very interested.
