Ugh BA can be a nightmare. I was asked to do a specific trick for a show and I didn't want to disappoint so I decided to use BA. I got all the fabric and props and set it up in my shed and filmed it to see how it would look. I don't think it turned out too bad.

I have since used this contraption in a few shows and it works great. Assuming I have time to set the lights. Here is the final product on its maiden voyage in front of an audience.

As you can see the audience is 12 feet or so from me and I practically had to blind them to hide it. So different from in my shed using natural daylight. Lessons I had to learn the hard way.

I could see the rehearsal video, but the other would not load for me. Not sure why.

Same here! The rehearsal (allowing for lighting) looked good.

Chad, I too can only see the rehearsal version. But it's a very nice effect.

Kent's advice as pertains to contrast really makes a lot of sense, and applied to your apparatus would make it really great! I would especially not use dark steps. We don't want to start and garden paths for our audience's brains!

As much as we need to make the invisible invisible, we also need to make the visible VISIBLE!

Guys they both played for me! The live show was kind of a Strip Tease number.

I got it that time. Nice work. It may appear different live rather than on video, but the contrast issue is a big concern for me. If you identify what the audience can and should see, and do everything to make those areas pop (lighter colors, focused lighting, etc.) then it will be much harder for the audience to focus on what needs to remain hidden... and it will appear more "honest". This is in so many ways, better than blinding the audience. In your case, the entire scaffold, the steps, and the costuming should be analyzed.

BTW - the routine was hot!

In the case of Taylor's NASCAR illusion, I can understand why he is not a fan of BA. That particular application is the absolute hardest to pull off, and the most at risk for problems. That's like walking naked across the stage and hoping no one sees you! Ha! It looked great, though!

Yeah..

I love the appearing Nascar and so does the audience..

I'm in a sit down house gig where it normally all works out great..

I'm just not a big fan of black art..

it is not practical for the ever day working magician.. Gary Darwin makes it sound like you can do it anywhere.
He is my buddy and I love the guy..

but I think that you need to have a house type gig to control lighting etc..

I also think to do it right.. it is not cheap..

Thanks
