I was in grad school at Penn State having breakfast at a diner. After the first plane hit, I heard the news on the diner's radio. Before the second plane, the broadcasters were discussing the possibility of terrorism, and I remember being a little offended by that. My thoughts were along the cynical lines of, "these *** media people -- there's this terrible accident, and all they can do is get people all panicked and riled up by talking about terrorism!" Then the second plane hit.
I didn't own a TV at the time, but I think I spent the next 48 hours at the student center, just watching the coverage. It was weird, because I didn't think anyone I knew was in any danger. (My Uncle lived in NYC at the time, but he lived in the West Village and worked the Bronx, so he had no reason to be near the WTC.) But I was hypnotized. And in any case, I wasn't in the mood to hear about fancy math at that point, or for many days after. |

I'll never forget it, mostly because it was so surreal for me. We had been in Washington DC on holiday just the week before, and on 9/11 I was at the driving range hitting balls. After one bucket was gone, I went to the clubhouse to get a second one, and the guy says to me, do you know what just happened? I said no, I was hitting balls. And he points to the TV set. I'll never forget that moment.
