I've just recently been trying to get into mentalism. I'm having trouble finding good, informative books that teach useful methods.
Does anyone have an recommendations for a complete beginner in mentalism? |

Thank you very much. I'm looking forward to owning some of the books recommended in that article.

Hey Billy. Welcome to the Café, and to mentalism. The essential reading, in my opinion, would be Corindas 13 Steps to Mentalism, as well as Annemanns Practical Mental Magic. From there you will have quite a bit of material to work with while you develop your persona and style.

I recently learned in mentalism that it's better to learn one routine to the fullest then to learn a dozen things at once. In magic you can get away with this, in mentalism it's all you... not your effects that get all the attention...

I personally would favor The Jinx over Practical Mental Magic/Effects. More fun to read and you get to know Annemann and his opinions along with lots of other information, hidden messages, history, etc. just think it is more interesting.

Quote: I'd say you need a balance, it's absolutely useless to be able to do a ton of effects if you can't sell a single one of them to your audience, but on the other hand it's not great having a really convincing premise and persona if you can only do one effect. Get a good grounding in the fundamentals but at the same time think about your premise and your persona and style. Learn the fundamentals then you can use those on the fly to acheive the effects that are consistent with your persona and premise. Likewise once you have an idea of your premise it will be easier to work out what skills to focus your study and practice on.

The Fundamentals of Professional Mentalism by Bob Cassidy and The Principals of Mentalism by Richard Osterlind -- are both outstanding resources that provide a very valuable overview of mentalism.
You may also want to consider Maximum Entertainment by Ken Weber and Mentalism, Incorporated by Chuck Hickok. These were four very important books for me personally. I've also found the 13 Steps and PME most useful. You'll find a lot of the "Latest Greatest" mentalism props in these "oldest classic" pages. Hope these are helpful to you. Welcome! David

There is a surprising amount of card work in The Jinx I thought...and some quite magicky stuff too - time change obviously, but I did find that a little eye-opening when I first read it...

I don't believe The Jinx was an exclusively mental publication. The sharp division we see today isn't as prevalent in publications of the time period.

I'm the one who is new to mentalism. Quote:

Along with the books, you might want to pick up Richard Osterlind's "Mind Mysteries" and "Easy To Master Mental Miracles" DVD sets, and also Bob Cassidy's "Mental Miracles" DVD. It can only help to see many of the things you'll read about put into practice by two masters.

I agree with gabelson, try to watch some dvds so that you can see in practice what you read.
Richard Osterlind also has "13 Steps To Mentalism" and "Annemann's Practical Mental Effects" on dvd, both high recommended! |
