So believe it or not, Iv been into magic for over 14 years, I was a Jr member at the castle, and I'm an adult member now, and I have NEVER EVER played around with gimmicked decks. Iv used gimmicks. Like a double facer or backer, or some double stick tape here and there, things like that, But nothing like a stripper, or marked, or "svengulli?" or any other type of deck. Weird huh?
Well I had been watching a few penguin lectures and two things really stuck out and made an impression on me. #1. I was watching Boris Wild, and saw some of his marked deck work, and I thought wow. Imagine how clean you can make things, and how much LESS Technical (Sleights) you can construct a routine by using gimmicks. And that leads me to an indirect quote from a Joshua Jay lecture. Which was (and I'm paraphrasing here) "This should show where the direction of my magic is headed, I use to try and make everything "pure" no gimmicks. But now my only concern is STRENGTH OF THE EFFECT, and the best way from Point A to Point B. and if the strongest way from Point A to Point B is with a stack, then we will use a stack, if its with a gaff, then we will use a gaff." and he goes on from there. That is the attitude I am starting to take.. More "smart gimmicking, and less work (sleights) with the main intention of making the effect as STRONG as posssible. Anyway.. That was just a bit of a rant. hmm..in fact I think I'm going to write down what he said as a direct quote and make that my new signature... hmmm Thanks Josh! Ok so back on topic. lol sorry... I know nothing about marked decks. And Im looking for some suggestions of dvds that contain some great STRONG marked deck routines. (and I don't mean little "at the dinner table quickies" but seriously nice "Castle worthy routining" - I don't know how else to phrase it...Just.. Good magic. Moving Forward, I have seen the Boris Marked deck system and I really like it, it seems very easy to fallow rather then something like the Blood marking system iv seen by Daniel Madison (I think that's the person). Speaking of tricky business with decks.. How about killer routines that use just a duplicate card in the deck? I bet you can create some amazing shizzle with just a duplicate card... Any good material on this "genre" as well? I like both of these (gimmicks / Genre's) for a couple reasons. 1. easy to Hide, like the marked deck, no laymen is going to notice it..or having a dupe, its easy to sneak one in and out when needed by palming it off or whatever. Lastly, Is there any other 'genres" of gimmicks that open up a variety of "easier-to-do" effects that make for very STRONG routines. - Kinda like I was talking about with the Joshua Jay simi-quote (not just a single gimmick for a single trick.. but more of a utility gimmick that can be used for a bunch of routines. Just like the marked deck... Any suggestions for other genre's of gimmicks that you think I may be interested in checking out? Thanks for taking the time to read my rambling.. But eh.. I figure it would be better then saying! HI! Whats the best marked deck dvd out there? and whats the best gimmicks for routines? Lol, Thanks for any info that anyone cares to share fellas! -Derek |

Hi Derek,
Please PM me for more detailed information as some of the suggestions I have wouldn't be appropriate exposure wise in an open forum. Snag Dan Harlan's A Little R&B. You will LOVE the effects and yes, they ARE Castle worthy. Not marked cards but something else. PM Dan for more details. If you do a Café search, you'll find a detailed review I wrote for this. If it doesn't HAVE to be a DVD, get Boris Wild's book on marked cards. Also, Ted Lesley's work on marked cards is superb. Marked for Life and Hidden in Plain Sight are great booklets by Kirk Charles that will give you a lot of material and alternate marking methods. Finally, what Joshua Jay was talking about actually hearkens back to the late master Theo. Annemann. Annemann (and Vernon) preached that EFFECT is everything and method is important insofar as it maximizes impact of effect. Don't dismiss a Svengali BTW. In Simon Lovell's book Simon Says there is a KILLER Svengali routine that will slay anyone because the SV isn't handled like an SV at all. Get this: you can overhand shuffle the SV in Simon's routine!! Strippers: GREAT decks! Victor Farelli did a whole series of effects in Hugard's Magic Monthly and implemented principles that are rarely employed. Hugard's is available as a DVD complete run from Lybrary.com If you have The Encyclopedia of Card Tricks, look up Mene-Tekel. Also, Nathan Kranzo has superb work on this relatively little known, little used deck. STRONG stuff from Kranzilla!! Best, Vlad |

Hi Derek
You may want to check out the Trilby Deck System from Big Blind Media - an updated Sven, Stripper, and color changing system that's really cool. Even those who owned a set of TV Magic cards can be fooled by this Sven setup. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S14346 Sam

My main problema is that my eyes are not good so I can never really see them, couple that with dark working siyuations and I am sunk.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

OH George you bring up a very good point, I didn't take into consideration poor lighted environments. Def something to think about while structuring a routine. good call bud.
Big Sam - Ill take a look at it. Thank you! |
