Can't have a strong economy without the Middle Class. Lou Dobbs was reporting on this years and years ago:
Quote:
The gap in employment rates between America's highest- and lowest-income families has stretched to its widest levels since officials began tracking the data a decade ago, according to an analysis of government data conducted for The Associated Press. That's why I was saying that wealthy people sometimes are out of touch with reality because their wealth puts a barrier between themselves and the real world without them even realizing it. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/employment......259.html

The last time this came up, it was pointed out / argued that many of the middle class were moving up.
Here is the other side of the coin: http://www.latimes.com/local/la-me-lower......35.story "Amid slow economic recovery, more Americans identify as 'lower class' - A small but surging share of Americans consider themselves 'lower class,' a surprise to some researchers and activists despite the bruising economy."
Make America Great Again! - Trump in 2020 ... "We're a capitalistic society. I go into business, I don't make it, I go bankrupt. They're not going to bail me out. I've been on welfare and food stamps. Did anyone help me? No." - Craig T. Nelson, actor.

I would say that I came from a Middle Class family, but right now, I would define myself as lower class in the economic sense. I mean pay taxes, but I am not rich by any stretch. But I do try my best. I can't see how anybody who is "in touch" with the real world can say that the Middle Class is moving up. Or perhaps some in the upper Middle Class moved up to being wealthy and are no longer Middle Class, while most in the lower Middle Class ceased to be Middle Class and became lower class. In my view, there is no Middle Class anymore. It's either your rich or poor. Economic inequality is pretty rampant these days.

"Employment Gap Between Rich and Poor Widest On Record"
How far back do the records go? I suspect that during the Middle Ages the gap might have been bigger. |

Seemed like people had more money back in the day and the economy was stronger.

Perhaps if we look at the average slave income before the civil war we could find worse conditions than we have today, but I'm only guessing?

I would love to see proof of that.
But as balducci implied people move between these classes. Like most things trying to box people in with labels just does not work.

The minimum wage is not a living wage.
Corporations are wringing more productivity out of less full time workers - and raking in record profits. Our economy is 75% based on consumption. Less wages means less consumption - less consumption means companies will hire less. It's a feedback loop. Our nation's infrastructure is slowly crumbling - all those great roads and bridges, water systems, electric grids, dams, schools, etc Corporations vastly benefit from the wonderful infrastructure that prior generations had the foresight to make a priority and invest in the intangibles of a brighter future for the next generations. The wealthy today generally don't see things like the great prior generations did of the 40's and 50's. They vote for those who choose to block sorely needed investments in the future of American infrastructure. We have fallen far behind other countries as we are not preparing for the future as we used to. The wealthy 1% won't pay any attention to the crumbling infrastructure until it hits them directly where it counts - and we all know where that is. Unfortunately the rest of us have little say to compete with powerful lobbyists and wealthy out of touch congress members. So we wait - until something bad happens and then MAYBE we try to catch up to long overdue infrastructure spending and investments that could really help to put a few people back to work with decent paying jobs that would result in more spending to propel the economy.

I also a gap between generations as well, such as the World War II generation and the Vietnam War generation. However, I think the Baby Boomers have some things in common with my generation, although there are some differences as well. One of the things I like about the Baby Boomers is some of the progressive politics and things like Star Trek. Their will always be differences in generations and how each generation perceives things, that's just the way it's always been. You also have to remember that during the Vietnam War, it was the great generation of World War II that were the generals and the political leaders and everything starts with the leadership. So, even though that generation helped to win World War II, under their leadership, they also helped to lose the Vietnam War because they were trying to fight Vietnam, like it was World War II and Vietnam was not World War II. On the flip side, I think "Stormin Normin" Schwarzkopf was a great leader and general who learned the lessons of Vietnam which helped to contribute to his victory in Operation Desert Storm. All in all, I think it's time for the country to start rebuilding the economy, Middle Class and start investing in new infrastructure and focus on that.

I feel that after the poop hits the fan next month the American people will spring into action just they did in the 90's when this happened before, and something good or bad will happen, we shall see.

They'll just have to move to China to sell their good and start learning how to speak Chinese because nobody here will have any money to spend to buy any of the rich folks' products or services. Hopefully they don't mind living under a Communist dictatorship who might turn on them at any moment either in their efforts to turn an extra buck they can longer make in the United States. Or they could always just retire and move to Switzerland and buy off a few politicians their to make sure nobody messes with there Swiss bank account or a few loopholes get created so they won't have to pay taxes. If they move to Switzerland, that's one less rich person buying off a politician here in the US and we can move forward and create a strong economy again without being obstructed by money used to buy off politicians. They can always just bail to Switzerland, it's not like rich folks are patriotic anyway or actually care about the country, given some of the citizenship renouncements. We're better off without them.

The cable TV industry is complaining that more and more Americans every day are canceling cable service because they can't afford cable TV.

Is the minimum wage supposed to be a living wage? If so it then discourages people from moving up.
What a sad state of affairs we have when the simple idea of not spending more than you take in has to be some sort of movement and not just common sense.

If you only make $9.00 an hour you will never be able to afford to hire a children's magician for your kids birthday party. When that happens I will have to go out and get a day job too.

So patriotism is defined by a willingness to allow your money to be taken from you and given to another? Seriously? Action Danny, action. Afghanistan taught me the importance of paying attention to people's actions and not their words. It also taught me the importance of decisive action and decision making. You got to learn to pay attention to action, not words. Action is also what builds a business too, not words.
