I don't watch TV, but my roommate here in the hospital does, and this evening the channel he was watching kept advertising the upcoming newscast with blurbs talking about the "racist uproar [greeting] the new Miss America".
When the story was finally aired, it amounted to this: a bunch of yahoos tweeted a bunch of idiotic and offensive nonsense about the new Miss America. Now, my question is this: since when is it news that yahoos spout idiotic and offensive nonsense? Does Twitter make it a Movement? Can an "uproar" be tweeted into existence? I honestly don't understand. How could a bunch of tweeting idiots manage to grab headlines world wide? What's next? Reuters and UPI are gonna start gleaning YouTube comments for the daily news? What am I missing? |

If it supports the liberal presses meme about a racist America, then it's news. Easy.

Thanks for the hello.
But surely you don't assume that Germany has the same "liberal press meme[s]" as the USA? And even if it does, isn't it scraping the bottom of the barrel to report tweets as an "uproar"? I remember being struck by the same weird feeling when the media reported about how much Twitter activity Mylie Cyrus generated with her VMA performance. Heavy tweeting = real news. |

They may just be trying to show that racism is still a thing. Really you can see that on Twitter or YouTube comments any day so I don't know what's special about this one compared to all of the others, but I don't pay much attention to the news.

If anyone thinks that racism isn't alive and well in America, they're just not paying attention.

Usually it will be reported on when a public person tweets something but it has moved into whenever lots of people are tweeting something. Shoot, there's a whole website, twitchy.com, capturing and commenting on tweets. I suspect that it has to do with the fact that almost every public person, reporter, politician, etc. is tweeting these days. I'm sure they all figure that since the're doing it, it MUST be important! |

There is a reason why the announced IPO for Twitter implicitly values the company at $8 billion.

I've noticed the news on TV now is reporting stuff from the Internet...stuff that's days old. they seem to have a growing sense that , somehow, they have to cover the internet's news as well as whatever is happening in the real world. Even to the point of reporting how many 'hits' a thang has gotten.

I do think it's important that when people are out there saying racism isn't a problem anymore that there are also people pointing out how fallacious that is though. 'Cause I don't much cotton to fallacious argumentin'.

Today is twitter IPO day, as most of you no doubt know.
Twitter surges in IPO: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/twitter-su......905.html And in related news ... Twitter downgraded to Sell: blogs.wsj.com/moneybeat/2013/11/07/twitter-downgraded-to-sell-simply-too-expensive/

I didn't know you were in hospital Jeff. Good luck and get well soon and all that.
Twitter eh I don't think I have read one but I know my son makes money from it some way. I don't like the sound of it.

Tommy, I was in hospital for five days back in September. I'm OK now.

On a side note, I've noticed that in the last year the daily TV news seems to be reporting, as NEW, stuff that I've read on AOL Feeds several days prior. It's like the News is combing the internet to get its news...days late.
Another industry dessicated by technology.

I am unaware of ANY place in America where racism "never existed." The problem is that those racists who aren't proud of their bigotry, are oblivious to it.

The root word of "twitter" is "twit." Which, for the most part, seems appropriate.
