What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Aces- how do you view the efforts at requiring voter ID, which may deprive legitimate citizens of their right to vote? If you favor it, how can you reconcile that with your pronouncement that nothing should infringe on 2nd amendment rights?

EsnRedshirt - how do you view the efforts at requiring voter ID, which may deprive legitimate citizens of their right to vote (LOL)? If you are against it, how can you reconcile that with your expectation that people must pass a background check to exercise their constitutional right to purchase a weapon or own a drivers license to drive a car? (I think Bob has told us that driving a car is also a constitutional right.)

Rockwall, yes- I think that people, should pass a background check to own a gun. I think they should have insurance to drive a car (so if they crash into me, they don't leave me holding the bag.) And I think there should be a reasonable check of citizenship when registering to vote.
I don't believe voter fraud is an issue; I think it's currently a rare occurance. I do think uninsured drivers are an issue, but we have reasonable measures in place already to help discourage them. However, I think it's even easier for someone to obtain a firearm when they shouldn't have one, than it is for someone to vote illegally or drive illegally, and that, I believe, is a problem.

Easier to obtain a firearm when they shouldn't have one? Hmmm, I had to think about that. You know, you may be right (about the voting part, not really about the driving part. I mean, comeon, how could it be harder to drive illegally? You just get in the car and start it up!). I mean, I've never actually tried it but at least from the movies and tv shows I've seen, it seems like a criminal can always find a fence to sell them a gun. Of course, none of the suggested gun control legislation would do anything about that.
Now the question is, is it 'legally' easier to obtain a firearm when you shouldn't have one than it is to drive or vote illegally? |

I thought it was a fairly reasonable presentation. A couple of points:
1) Fear sells. I think he made that point well. What he left unsaid is that the more fear, the more guns are sold. 2) The US/English comparison was a little sketchy; switching from murder rate to violent crime rate is not irrelevant to the terms of the discussion when the point of gun control advocates is that guns are more violent and cause more harm than other kinds of weapons. 3) He accurately pinpoints that gun use is much higher in large urban areas. To me this suggests two things: a) Using federal policy incentives to limit the growth of megopolises (megapoli?) b) Since the use of guns is very different in different parts of the nation, municipalities should be free to regulate guns in the ways that their local citizens see fit.

To let everyone have guns easily to protect themselves from criminals also let's the criminals get those guns easily.
Yes, the situation is complicated. I don't have an answer for you.

You say Al's gotten meaner over the years and seems intolerant of those who disagree with him. That's an olive branch? Not speaking for Al, but if you'd have left out those comments, you might have gotten a response.
