I have noticed a few recent posts about the retention vanish, and all this discussion has made me want to re-evaluate my own. I've only learned this off Bobo's and David Roth's videos, as well as mimicking other's that I've seen on youtube videos. I'm worried I'm not getting an optimal burn, my concealing hand is moving too much, and my angles aren't perfect yet. Usually, it just blows past those I'm performing for, so I'm not making any egregious errors, but in my quest for dexterous perfection...
I'd like to know what the best sources for teaching this effect are. Does Mickey Silver have anything on this? I saw Dennis Behr's videos, but those looked like performance only. Thanks in advance. |

Gotta love the magical Snap, Crackle & Pop of Vinnie's "Rice Krispies Vanish." Always just beautiful to see or not see, as it were. There ain't many out there doing the ROV any more effectively/creatively than The Godfather here. He is a real force in all sorts of closeup magic and continues to leave a most distinctive mark on the craft. Some talk it, he walks it...I'm just sayin'.

There are several good resources for learning the retention pass. Most of Roth's dvds teach it. Books like Kaufman's Coinmagic, and Roth's Expert Coin Magic teach it. Al Schneider on Coins has a great description of the Snap Back vanish, which is the basis for my own retention pass. As mentioned above, the Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights teaches several variations of the retention pass, in a very clear manner (there are 5 different versions taught on volume 2 along with additional tips), and several variations of the R.O.P.S. move (Retention Open Palm Steal), along with the New Theory retention Pass. On volume 10 of the New York Coin Magic Seminar DVD series, there is a discussion of the retention pass between Roth, Gallo, and myself, where each of our passes is discussed and compared. And, there are many individual DVDs from many performers that teach their own handling of the retention pass. Good luck!
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

Dr. Michael Rubinstein's Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights. It is a treasure trove of coins sleights in general, but for the retention vanish alone I count eight different variations that are taught. Eight! Won't find a better source anywhere IMO.

The David Roth and Michael Rubinstein dvds are great resources for learning the retention pass as well as the books from David Roth, Richard Kaufman, and Larry Barnowsky. Let's not forget The Godfather, who has real chops and has graciously shared many of his instructional videos....

I can see good applications for them (the drop vanish is typically the kind of move I was looking for for one of my routine) The crimp hold out is perfect too Is there any legal detailed tutorial somewhere? |
