He lost me when he used the word "swaggalicious" in performance. The tremendous amount of pre-show work really got on my nerves, and I think to the laymen (my wife), a lot of uncertainty or confusion was added to the effects because of this. His vernacular and ego ostracize him from appealing to a larger audience. I'd like to introduce him to Sean Avery.

Here's the link to his video. Am I the only that was thinking the effect was ok but, he didn't really explain what the point was?

Unfortunately Americas Got talent is a POPULARITY CONTEST. ALSO unfortunately the judges on AGT are hard on Las Vegas style show magic because they have been exposed to it so often over the years. The AGT judges always react strongly to mentalism and predictions and with "HOW DID HE DO THAT?". They traditionally have been un-impressed with larger magic acts no matter how well they have been performed. Without taking anything away from Collins Key as a performer his making it to the finals was based on his popularity with teen and pre-teen girls who loved his Justin Beiber like looks. He even had the moxy to call his young followers "key-pers" and stated that his goal was to become the HEART-THROB of Magic. His self promotion skills aimed toward the young social media crowd combined with the lack of magic sophistication by the 4 judges allowed him to make the finals. The fact that he got that far when true professionals like Scott Alexander did not is bothersome to myself.
In the final scheme of things the right person won this years AGT: Kenichi Ebina. Mike |

... when magic is not on TV magicians complain and when a magician succeeds on TV magicians complain...
A seventeen year old magician placed 5th in the most watched talent competition in the world... let's celebrate that. Sure there are magicians I personally like more or I think are more "artistic" but none of them would make it to the top 12. Of course this is a popularity contest and guess what, main stream entertainment is led by entertainers who are the most popular with the public. Not saying that is good just reality. One of our own has succeeded in appealing to a younger demo, that frankly could care less about magic as a popular entertainment form... that is a good thing for magic moving forward. John |

I thought that modified Anniversery Waltz he did was a very poor choice for TV. Glad he did well but not the best magician and not a million dollar act.

In general you are correct and I think anytime a magician advances we should be happy BUT this young man advanced because of "his look" not because of his magic. Hang around the magic "water cooler" and bring up the name Chris Angel and see the negative energy that follows. As magicians we should be happy with Chris Angels success but instead he has become the brunt of many jokes and negative comments. If Eric Dittleman looked like Collins Key he might have won last years competition.
Another unfortunate reality of AGT is that the playing field is not "LEVEL". I have spoken personally to 2 former AGT magicians. It is clear that extreme pressure is placed on performers to enter in less than profitable contractual situations that benefit AGT. Mike |

You say that like it's a bad thing Of course you are welcome to think it's a bad thing, but it is also reality in today's marketplace and simply a matter of a performer trying to increase his odds of success using all tools and means available. I can't really fault him for that. From a business standpoint, it's just smart business sense. I personally don't care much for Collins or the effects he performed, not my cup of tea, but that is to be expected as I am certainly not in his target demographic. However, I do have to admit he seemed to have the right thing at the right time and did whatever he could to capitalize on that. I personally don't have a problem with that and do appreciate him putting magic in front of a widespread audience. You can nitpick him or the effects he did, but I believe he portrayed magic in good light and that's good for all of us. So I thank him and wish him much continued success, even though I wouldn't likely buy a ticket to a show of his myself. |

I was a huge fan of AGT. I think that the only reason Collin made it as far as he did is because he had a good following. He grabbed the attention of a younger crowed. I believe Leon was a better magician and better showman. It was nice to see a magician in the final 6 though. Hopefully one of these years we can get a magician to win.

I just watched the date night segment for the first time - that one felt really flat to me - especially with the assistants doing all "the work" + quite a bit of PS as others alluded to.
Is this really great magic - he just stood there talking, as the effect itself was self working. Do I think he's talented? As a confident performer sure, but for my taste he seemed to go more for style than any real substance - empty calories. This is supposed to be a talent show. I could see him doing something other than magic.

BTW nothing wrong with using magic as an angle for an acting, TV or other entertainment related career. More power to Collins for getting this far.

I was pleased to see that Collins used Youtube and Twitter to make his effects seem more relevant. I am very happy for him and his success! At the very young age of seventeen he has received more exposure than most of us will ever receive. Now the question is can he use the exposure to develop his art to a higher level and become the next David Copperfield? He has the looks and likeability, but he needs to work on his presentation and skill.
Good luck Collins! |

His effects impressed his audiences, who - thanks god - are or the most part not magicians.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I believe the effect he did with the twitter prediction earlier in the season was almost the same presentation that Jason Willman did on Ellen. I do hope he had permission, otherwise it seemed like a copy of an act/presentation.

Oops Justin Willman, not Jason.
Here is Justin on Ellen: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sOU2WXaDEs0 And Collins Key on AGT http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qO1bi0pMlCk Looks strikingly similar. |

You've got my vote! I wish Collins all the best. He put "Magic without Boxes" out there for people to see. Sammy
