In case anyone one is interested, I will be performing the late Parlour shows at the Magic Castle Oct. 14th thru the 20th. I will be doing sideshow material ie: swords, glass eating and Blockhead. I hope to see some of you there.
I will be out in LA as of Oct. 9th for rehearsals for Play Dead. We open at the Geffen Playhouse on Nov. 5th for a six week run. Todd |

Todd Robbins!
Right! De Yip Loo and I were good friends (since about 1954). He was a good builder, eh? And, WHIZZO was a ("fairly good performer" of blade boxes, too!) I think that I mentioned in another thread (re: blade boxes) that Jay and I did it as part of the matinee at Abbotts, about 30 years ago. We dinged 'em 'good' and netted about 5 yards. Al Ulman's wife was in the box. She had printed "LEFTY" on one of her "mammary glands" (got to keep this pitch family oriented!)and when Jay looked down into the box, she had removed "some cover". Jay nearly had a heart attack! I'm writing up some info, on the late HERMAN SUSS in my upcoming book. Met him on the John R. Ward carnie in the mid '40s. He was managing an illusion show and, naturally, the blade box was the ding. First blade box that I ever saw was in the kid top with ARTHUR BROS. CIRCUS on July 4, 1941. It was a "sit down" or "squat" box, and REAL CAVALRY SABERS were used. The ding was 5 cents! Have a red one at the Castle. I've worked the castle, and, as Jay used to say: "Yes, I've worked the castle, and as soon as I can afford it, I'll work it again!" Retired, and off the road, but still "with it" and "for it" and not "up against it"! Dick Oslund Sneaky, underhanded, devious, and surreptitious itinerant mountebanc!

Dick,
I look forward to your write up on Herman Suss. He is one of those names that comes up often and yet I know very little about him. I do know that he lived in Gibtown. It will be interesting to see what his connection was to Burling Hull. Todd |
