It says "Based on a new principle, Docc Hilford’s Syndrome Deck gimmick can be applied to any deck of playing cards in less than 3 minutes at home or at a show!"
http://www.nanacast.com/syndrome-deck Docc says "The Syndrome Deck will be the most talked about, most pirated and most used gimmicked deck since Brainwave". "There are virtually 1000s of effects possible. You instantly know any card chosen. You can instantly find any card chosen. You can control a spectator’s choice of color. The deck can be used in any normal card effect. The Syndrome Deck is an EXAMINABLE, SHUFFLE-ABLE deck of cards that enables you to perform at least a 1000 different effects! A gimmicked deck of cards can make a reputation for a mentalist or magician. Look at Brainwave and the Ultra Mental or Invisible deck. It’s almost impossible to beat them for direct effect and clean operation - but the Syndrome Deck beats them! Because it’s EXAMINABLE. fully explained on a 25 minute MP4 video. It includes a full hour MP3 audio Doccinar of deeper handlings and more presentations. And finally a follow up LIVE conference call to answer any questions you have about the deck. (A $19 value) All of this plus the most exciting deck in years ... Only $19 for a limited time. BONUS - Included in the hour Doccinar is an exclusive method of revealing any UNWRITTEN question with a single playing card! A presentation that works with the Syndrome Deck like magic! The SYNDROME DECK Q&A is included FREE. |

I'm somewhat confused by some of the claims about this deck... Not that I have any reason to disbelieve them, I just don't quite understand them. It "isn't really gimmicked" and yet it "remains secretly gimmicked". It also "isn't really a stacked deck" and "the order of the cards change after every shuffle" yet it "remains in order".
Those things sound impossible, but then again I guess that's the idea Can anyone speak to this deck's awesomeness or lack thereof? |

I got it. it's only $19 ( Docc offers the discount first and raises the price later ) so it's was easy to jump in. I know from other Docc products I have and use, that the price of this will go up.
First off, I've wanted/looked for a deck like this for 30 years, just not knowing what I was looking for. I use a stack/memorized deck and I'm switching to the Syndrome ( I took a Mandolin deck and applied the principle in under 10 minutes for the first one and under 5 minutes for the 2nd deck ). I followed Docc on the video and it worked perfect, right off the bat. I shuffled the deck, cut it, moved the cut to card aside and I knew what it was before I moved it to the side. So without a memorized stack or marked deck, I will know what card they chose, from a deck of 52 plus the joker. From a Magician standpoint, this is platinum. Not only the speed, but no need to buy marked decks ( which can be expensive ). You can perform card magic miracles with a stacked, SHUFFLED deck. If this had been just marketed for Magicians, it wouldn't be long before someone with a mentalist background found applications to that field. Docc got everyone covered with it. The 25 minute video starts off with Docc doing a reading with the deck, just for the camera. I've seen him do reading in person with cards and this is basically what he does ( Docc teaches what he uses ). Of course I was trying to figure out the deck, but the shuffling threw me off. No memorized/stack deck can be shuffled like this. In the video he explains the deck and you can following along and have one ready within minutes. Then there's a 1 hr. audio where Docc goes into advanced work using the Syndrome. Docc took time to answer the modern consumers "but what if..." questions before they get to ask them;-) The highlight, for me, is the bonus of doing an UNWRITTEN Q&A with the Syndrome deck. This was worth the price of admission. |

Sorry Zombie, still a little lost. Are you saying this is not a stacked deck, so old guys like me with minimum memory left available, will be able to achieve the same effects with this deck?

Thanks Zombie -- I ponied up after reading your message and just finished watching the video (though haven't made a deck yet). I had strongly suspected what the type of gimmick would be (and I was right) but I was baffled as to how it was applied and what kind of non-stack-stacking alchemy would be at work. Now I can second your recommendation: this is a fantastic utility deck based on an very simple and elegant idea, and I'm already coming up with all kinds of applications (and I haven't even listened to the 1hr audio yet). I had a deck sitting here that I was planning to mark this week, but I'm giving it the Syndrome instead.
@takeachance -- As the somewhat ambiguous language in the description suggests, it both kind of is and kind of isn't a stack. Very, very little memory is required, and Docc provides a foolproof mnemonic for the tiny amount that there is. It's nothing like what you think of when you think "stacked deck" |

I'd like to check this out but I've kind of gone over my magic budget. Certainly would like to get it for $19 rather than $49 but that's only for a limited time. Although I guess that should leave plenty of time considering Treslibre was limited and only supposed to be available for a brief time and it's still available 3 years later.

Looks almost to good to be true.
Just one question, can spectator choose the card they want or does it have to be a random one? (For example, he picks up the deck knowing he wants to take out the 2 of spades)

When you watch the video, then listen to the audio, go back and watch the video performance again. It's Doc performing the Q & A where nothing is written down and it's a masterpiece. If you have a stacked/memorized deck that you will never part with, this is worth getting to learn Doc's unwritten Q & A.

It can be shuffled quite thoroughly but not with total abandon by the spectator -- though as Docc notes in the video, the amount of easy and convincing (because it's basically genuine) shuffling the performer can do, plus the fact that you can repeatedly show the card faces with a random order that changes after each shuffle, makes spectator-shuffling mostly unnecessary. As for spectator choice, the situation you describe would limit what you can do, depending on what exactly happens when the card is selected. You can give them a genuine free selection in a variety of ways, including letting them see lots of faces as they make their choice, but handing them the deck to hunt through for a card they have in mind is probably going one step too far. |

Ok, this sounds interesting. I still want to know what the tradeoffs of the Syndrome deck are compared to stacked and memorized decks? If there is any of course. For those who own it, is there any advantage for using a stacked or memorized deck instead of a syndrome? What about marked decks? Is the price of marked decks the only advantage over the Syndrome deck?
After all, marked and syndrome will require your deck to be in play. Marked deck can be shuffled, dropped, cut, and even be incomplete, and the mechanism will not change. A card taken out will immediately be known by the performer. The spectator can go through the deck, pick whatever they want, and the performer knows the card. I am just interested in knowing how the Syndrome deck beats the marked deck in areas other than price (which is still important). And reading the description page, I would love to know how clean is the "only card missing" effect? Also, how well can you transition from a normal deck effect to the syndrome deck? I mean can one alternate between normal card effects and effects using the syndrome? With stacked and memorized deck, that is usually not possible unless then effect is designed to retain the order or one knows how to get back to the order without raising suspicions. (Of course, with marked cards, that is not a problem at all because the method is stack independent) I know I asked many questions but I would love to make an informed purchase especially with the availability of other affordable options on the market (and in my repertoire). And if the answers border over exposure, please feel free to PM me. |

As with most of docc's stuff - its a twist on a combination of old school thinking...i watched the mp4 late last night and liked it a lot...if I get chance at the weekend, I might even review it in the appropriate area...
I think its one of those things where even if you decide to not use it, the education you receive is well worth the money... I will be testing it out soon...

Thanks to all of the above posts, I think I will get this over the weekend.
I've been having trouble reading the markings on some of my marked decks, simply because the spectator removes the card from a fan too fast for me to focus & catch the marking. Hopefully Docc's deck will solve this problem for me. But half the reason I'll make this purchase is to learn the subtleties from Docc's ideas. |

How about doing Richard Osterlind's "Challenge mind reading"? To be able to make use of it, I need someone to think of the card first and then find it.

You have to look at the chosen card if its marked. I have my head turned away when the card is selected. In fact, it could be chosen from a tabled deck while you were out of the room. When you return, WHAM! Audiences know about marked cards. So often, even if the method has nothing to do with marks, that's where they go. The use of a mrked deck must be extreemly subtle. Syndrome isn't marked. Docc |

I really like the idea behind the syndrome deck. It is very fast to make and you can read the chosen card very quickly. Most of the time you don't have to touch the deck again, after the card is chosen. But sometimes you need to touch to get the right informations.
The stacked deck or the marked deck have some advantages comparing to the syndrome. But if you really want to have a deck which is really easy to read and you want to show that the cards are really mixed. If you want also by the spectator. Then this is really a nice way. And for 19 $ it's really a nice tool to have in your pocket. Thanks Docc for this idea. |
