From canada.com. Quote: A beverage company’s attempt to combine French and English words under its bottle caps as part of a fun game for customers ended disastrously this week when an Edmonton woman unscrewed her Vitaminwater and saw the message “YOU RETARD” under the cap.

And she is drinking a beverage called 'zero'. The hits keep coming.

I guess I'm slow, but after reading the article I can't figure out how this happened. Were they randomly combining English and French words? Or was this message simply supposed to be funny?

Apparently they had native French and English speakers check over the lists in their mother tongues, but didn't think to have them read each other's lists. I'm a bit surprised that the word "retard" showed up in the French list. AFAIK the word is never used in isolation, but only following a preposition e.g. to be late is to be "en retard".

In 50 years, people will say, "They might have called her cognitively delayed, but we now know better."
"Torture doesn't work" lol
Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. |

I wish I could find a wonderful article I read about a year ago, with 10 common words that at some point in the past were considered crude at best, or extremely offensive at worst. The only two I remember: to say a woman was "pregnant" was considered extremely offensive in, I think the late 1800s. "Interview" as a verb was considered crude. |

These discussions are nice in the abstract. They're a little different when it's you, a friend or a family member on the receiving end.

But I don't find that incomptible with a sober discussion of how the connotation of words like these changes over time. The upshot - as far as I can tell - is that no matter what word or phrase is proposed to describe, let's say, mental retardation (for want of an objectively better term), eventually it will become offensive and another term will be substituted, the cycle then starting afresh. To my mind, it's not the fault of the term used; it's the fault of people who find any reference to such a condition offensive. And I, for one, do not know how to overcome that obstacle. |

Expressing some disappointment at the parent company of the beverage manufacturer might be a positive step toward not finding phrases like "bark b*tc*" or "five of clubs" in your food.
As best I recall from back in grades 1-5 and my peers there - the slow, easily distracted, vision impaired (led to behavior problems)... and their parents were less eager to indulge in pleading for special victim status. Then again it was just after the civil rights act but right before anti-miscegenation laws were passed. Are we going to use terms like "reality enhanced" and "morally challenged" now?

Add a question mark at the end and someone from Alabama might mistake this for a question asking them if they are very sleepy. "No, I'm jess a lil tard. I need a Red Bull."

I mean, they're just people. How about calling them "blond", or "good at math", or "left-handed", or "skilled at driving F-1 cars", or "unskilled at driving F-1 cars", or "nice", or "thoughtless", or whatever? The fact is that every conversation about people (and everything else) involves describing them in some way, and that's as it should be. The problem arises when certain characteristics are considered taboo. It's OK to use a word to describe someone's intelligence as above average, but not OK to use a word to describe someone's intelligence as below average? I'm sorry, but it simply doesn't make sense. Let's be sensitive about it, but let's not, in the name of sensitivity (or to avoid "labeling") refuse to talk about things. |
