Without question: When I was 5 years old. My mother very clearly showed me a coin and placed into her L.H. She opened the hand and the coin was simply gone. To this day it's the closest thing to "real" magic I have ever experienced and what I have always attempted "reaction wise" to produce from my own performance.
I have been convinced for over 40 years that the best ... whatever you want to call them: Effects, tricks, etc. are those that are the most direct and simple of effect. I have seen amazing and complicated routines that I liked, but they NEVER have affected me at a gut level like something as straight forward as Coin Thru...the coin thru the rubber dental dam have.

A PROP or a SECRET, IMO, is used to PERFORM a TRICK. A TRICK, like music, only exists while it is being performed. An EFFECT is what the spectator sees, or thinks that he sees.
I totally AGREE Brad! KIS MIF (Keep It Simple Make It Fun) is the principle that should guide the PRESENTATION. --And, PRESENTATION is always more important than the PROP.

To answer the OP's original question: When Mike Ince performed Dean Dill's Blizzard it blew me away. It caused some cognitive dissonance, I couldn't shake. Amazing effect when done well.

On TV / TV Special:
Grandpa Aces by David Copperfield The Ambitious Card (Fruit Loops) by David Blaine in 1st Street Magic Cyril hamburger production from poster in front of a brick wall Lu Chen morph two eggs into one heart shape egg Live shows / Magic Lecture / Magic Convention Lance Burton dove act in his show Yu Ho Jin manipulation act Lukas manipulation act Penn and Teller show - Airport security with a lady and bazooka production as finale, and the most fooling book test / word test I ever saw Cyril hand pass through aquarium to pull out a signed playing card Tommy Wonder Cups and Balls David Williamson EMC talk Juan Tamariz oil and water One more thing: Juan Tamariz tribute to Juan Anton & Dean Dill, it struck me so strong so hard, I thought I read all Tamariz books and Ascanio Vol 1 and this one trick just simply brought me back to layman. Another piece of miracle that I prefer not know the secret besides Juan's oil and water which I know somehow after read the Magic Way new edition, still amaze me how tight and excellent the construction was.
Most memorable moment - with Maestro Juan Tamariz & Consuelo Lorgia in FISM Busan 2018.

I assume we talk about performances, not tricks. For me it would probably be either Shin Lim's Fool Us performance or Shawn Farquhar's "Shape of My Heart".

Hey Skilldini! (aka Tim ******) I only got to see Moretti's sword box on TV, but, it was GOOD! I arrived at Inc. for a two week visit in the Charlie Miller Suite, when Jay returned from FISM. I think we spent a whole evening talking about it. Jasper couldn't stop talking about it for a couple of weeks!
POP! YES!!! Pete Tappan, and Joe, the "Story Telling Magician", whose name is momentarily stuck in my memory bank, did the Eclipse at Abbott's GTG, about 30 years ago. IT WAS STUNNING!

For me,
Live: Close-up: Dani DaOrtiz's lecture at FISM in Rimini this summer: he floored a room full of magicians and made us laugh irresistibly. Simply amazing. Stage: Vito Lupo act with smoke and ropes in a small theatre in Venice; the atmosphere was perfect, and he almost drove me to tears. On video: Close-up: Tommy Wonder's ambitious card with the ending to ring box. Stage: (Penn) and Teller's miser dream with coins to gold fishes. |

Copperfields Vanish of a Lear Jet. For a host of reasons. It seemed to have fooled almost everyone including magicians at the time. The solutions that were put forth for it's accomplishment are still a treasured memory. My favorite was the folks that thought he used a Sikorsky Air Crane to take it away. Or, the popular elevator in the middle of the tarmac. If you worked in a magic shop at the time about all that anyone talked about the next day was the Jet Vanish. Wonderful.

When I was a kid, I saw David Copperfield do misled. This was back when I actually used a pencil every day. I knew some magic, in fact was being mentored at the time. All the things I knew had not prepared me for that illusion. Still an inspiration today in simple, common tooled, impossible magic.

Michigan's Warren Stephens performing his dual control routine in the class room. I was deeply inspired and mystified.
I have yet to see anyone else perform dual control in a routine as fine as Warren's. Those two pencils moved all over the place on Warren's hand like they were alive. |
