Then there's the real real thing -- the previous link is from a movie.

I really like Tia Chi. I heard that in the past, in Asian countries, martial artists disguised, hid and taught their art through dances because some of the Asian authorities at the time outlawed the practiced of martial arts. So, this was a way that the martial arts were hidden from the view of the authorities and taught and passed on to the next generation. The authorities would think the locals were merely practicing dance and it looked like dancing, but in fact they were practicing martial arts. I don't know how true this is, but I heard this was done.

If you like Tia Chi, then you really should try Tai Chi! ( I couldn't resist.... Smile)

The dance disguise is true as far as I know for Capoeira and some Silat styles. Smile

Sometimes I go on a kick of watching youtube videos of various fighting styles versus each other. Lately, MMA is getting boring- they've found a mix of styles that really works, so most matches look the same. I like some of the earlier ones, with real diverse styles. There was one with Drunken Fist (I forget which style the opponent used.) The opponent won, he was well seasoned, but the drunken fist fighter was a newcomer, and managed to really win over the crowd, lasting quite a long time, and even escaping from a hold that would finish most people. His opponent congratulated him for a match well fought.

There are also a few matches involving sumo wrestlers which are really interesting to watch. Most early MMA matches would come down to grappling at the end; advantage, sumo. The match I saw had the one guy landing punch after punch, kick after kick. Everything bounced off. He tried for a leg sweep- big mistake. It was like kicking a tree. Then the sumo guy grabbed him and fell on top of him. (After that, things got ugly. Sumo should have won, but his opponent beat him around the head until things got bloody and he tapped out.)

I've seen a few videos of MMA Capoeira matches. They may be pretty, but most of the time the Capoeira guy loses.

Those would be the earlier UFCs with the Gracies still at the helm.

I personally enjoy watching weapon styles spar it out more than the empty hand guys...

Several members of the Gracie family have defeated sumo wrestlers. The most famous of these matches was probably Royce Gracie v. Akebono.

The best grapplers have mastered both jiu jitsu and traditional wrestling.

Anyone remember the old Keith Hackney fight from UFC 3 where he fought a 600 pound sumo fighter and won. You can see where he knocks him down at the 22 second mark. I miss not having weight classes in UFC.

I'm pretty sure I have it on DVD Smile
The early UFCs were my favorite, though I was a huge Forrest Griffin fan (even if he wasn't the best fighter).

One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.
