Watch this video starting at around 2 min

he does this freeze frame jump and pose that is pretty magical..

you will see him pick something up.. I think that he is in control of the strobe flash. Any thoughts?

Pretty cool part of the act.

I'm surprised no one mentioned this before..

Very magical act.

He may be in control of the strobe, or just knew when the flashes were and did a series of jumps. Hoping for the best outcome.

It looked great.

That was really neat! I wish he had done a few more jumps to make it look like he rotated in a full circle.

Looks like maybe the first three flashes could have been the same jump with different poses.
the the fourth flash I believe was a second jump.

He looks to be pretty much around the same height though.

You would think that he would be getting lower each time..

Not sure, But very cool

Yes, looks like he picks up a trigger just prior. Cool idea.

This effect was taken from famous modern dance choreographer, David Parsons. He did a piece called “Caught” more than 20 years ago. Do a search on Google to learn about and watch the Parsons vid. You will be more than impressed. Even more incredible when seen live.

When I was dancing in companies full-time, I met and performed magic for David. Totally loved magic and was like a kid filled with amazement. He described the challenges of making the gimmick to do this as there was nothing like it. Based on camera controlled flashes, but customized for him. Timing is key.

Yes, the dancer is in control of the strobes.

Glad you saw it Taylor. Found out it was first done in 1982. I sincerely hope fellow magicians will respect the creator of this as we do other originators of illusions by not copying.

If you ever get to see it live, you will appreciate the magic of this piece even more.

Or asking for permission...that's another way to show respect/fairly use material. What's the statute of limitations for illusions? Has this been discussed here?

Amazing performance!!! It seems a few frames are missing from the strobe jump in some Youtube videos. This one apparently has all the frames: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s7b72kiKJY

Yeah he controls the strobe with a wireless flash like photographers use at sports events. Simple push button. Time it pushed when you jump...looks very elegant but simple to do.
Arenas typicall have a number of them hanging for events. Photographers with proper passes will be given the wireless button that plugs into the camera. So when they shoot a pic, the arena flash goes off. Eliminates the need for photogs to be up close blinding the performers. Has a manual button as well.

Good practice for this is to stand straight and jump while lifting your knees to almost a sitting position..you flash when your knees reach max height. So in the end, by making the same jump each time with flash timing, looks as if you are sitting in the air. There are a ton of cool things you can do with a bit of thought. Very fun!

Thanks for posting that video! Hadnt seen this performer.

Wow, that backwards fall is so ballsy. This man has probably suffered a few concussions while perfecting his craft. Thanks for sharing!
