I'm looking for a good book or perhaps video on wand work. In particular I want to learn Vernon's wand spin vanish.

It helps to use a ball with a little bit of weight to it.

Michael Lee used to sell balls of the perfect /size weight w/ his Millennium cups

I use Monkey Knuts. They make a nice heavy monkey fist at a great price.

Gr8orilla,
Those Monkey Knuts look awesome. I'll have to try them out. I made my self a set of little Baseballs with mouse balls as the core. I was never able to find the right size Baseball with the proper weight, so I made my own. These Monkey Knuts look like they would work great. Ronnie |

The monkey knuts look rad but also seem a bit pricey. I wish I didn't have the problem of looking at everything and trying to figure out a way I could make it on my own... Which always ends up costing me 3 times as much in the long run! Ahhh!

Check out Camille Gautier's "MAGIC WITHOUT APPARATUS". I THINK that that's where the Professor got the "inspiration" for the wand spin vanish. (The wand spin really adds a bit of "flash" to the vanish!
My copy of Gautier is in storage. If I get a chance, I'll check it and give you a page reference.

You could look up Ganson's explanation in "The Dai Vernon Book of Magic". Vernon's cups and balls routine was available as a separate pamphlet too. You can probably find an inexpensive copy on-line.
I believe Brian Watson, of http://www.cupsandballsmagic.com has some work on the wand spin as well. I still use the wand spin myself. You can see it used at 1:29 in this routine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wksAZSAccvQ I put a little something extra on top of the vanish. I learned it from "The Dai Vernon Book of Magic". KG |

L&L has Michael Ammar's book in pdf format for a very reasonable price if you don't want to pay a lot for an out of print book.

Man... those balls teleport like its the 23rd century! (I love my Midis) When you make the blue ball go from middle to right cup... This is spectacular. I have been roughly conceptualizing a "multi color" C&B routine for a while... This is more than I could ever imagine! (Now the intense study begins... what a seamless & awesome performance that is). |

Did Dai Vernon not explore the concept of colored balls back in the 50s But came to the conclusion that it was only
adding more Confusion to somthing he (as is Evident ) he and others had througherly thought through. m123 |

Very possible. He was of the mindset that "Confusion isn't magic"
In Kent's case, I don't think it's confusing at all.

I've had several magicians tell me using the different colors is confusing. I think using the different colors eliminates confusion. Do you think the average layman doesn't know that using balls all the same color makes implied substitution really easy? Using the different colors complicates the performance. Hopefully, someday, I'll be able to translate the effects, within the routine, to eliminate even more confusion. Still, I'd rather do an original routine rather than even Vernon's. I learned more about sleight-of-hand, rehearsal and blocking from developing this crazy thing than I have any other single task. For me, the confusion is and was worth it. KG PS. TKF, Dave, Thank you both, very much! |

Kent, I love your cups and balls more and more every time I see it. Is it strange for me to be in love with another man's balls...and cups?

I don't think the different colors adds confusion at all. Amazement, yes.

Maybe the different colors add confusion for the magician.
Kent, The biggest reason I have not purchased your cups and balls routine is that it is one of the few pieces of magic that still fools me even though I know how it is done. Your moves are good enough that the When eludes me and thus it still looks like magic to me! |
