I'm undecided about about which dvd to get. Any reccomendations? I'd say that I'm a beginner when it comes to performing card magic. I do have Royal Road but having a tough time learning sleights from books. Your thoughts?

As a beginner, Kard Klub would not be the way to go. Especially since it focuses mainly on a single trick. The thing I like about KK is it goes over the performance aspect. I can't speak for Born To Perform because I'm done dealing with penguin for various reasons. If you have RRTCM, and are looking for the same kinda stuff, in DVD form.. I'd say get Basic Card Technique by Richard Kaufman - and I'll second the reccomendation for Easy To Master Card Miracles.

Based on what I *think* I know, Born to Perform has very little material. though Pearlman claims that he teaches you new ways to perform them, and teaches you things most people overlook, I kinda find it pretentious and an ellusionist wannabe video
but I think, if you have the money, and aren't against ellusionist your best move might be to purchase Crash Course in Card Magic or Crash 2: AmbitiouXs Keep it mind that you don't have to be an 'ambitious' performer to wanna buy CC2. otherwise, I'll second the vote for Ammar's ETMCM. don't own any of those I mentioned though. just my observations. just my recommendations |

I wouldn't get either. Get Michael Ammar's Easy to master Card miracles series. It comes with those sleights and better effects than the ones on those videos.

I own Kard Klub and like it a lot. As Chris Michaels said, it is nice to have a video focusing mainly on presentation and how to apply it correctly. I very rarely buy from Penguin so I don't own Born to Perform.

You can't lose with Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles.
I have heard good reviews on Born to Perform, but I must say I feel the reviews are extremely biased and done by less knowledgable people. (I don't mean to offend anyone by the way.) The tricks taught on ETMCM are classic effects that have stood the test of time. |

Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles is a good bet.
I am not going to comment on either of the other products because I have rather strong feelings towards them that don't need to be expressed here. |

Ok I have Michael Ammar's videos and they are very good. I would recommend that as a very good set of card magic.
But, I am just wondering why some people seem to have bad feelings about Penguin Magic and Oz? Did I miss something? I don't have Born to Perform, but I do have Stealing Pips and it is very good. |

I feel ripped off on some of Ammar's descriptions of classic effects.
Especially triumph, his explanation is missing all the good subtle moves that are in Dai Vernon's original trick. Not to mention Ammar's false shuffle for triumph isn't even the same as Vernon's, it's worse! Oh well...they seem mostly good anyway, books are still best because you don't pick up the performer's habits and style.

I would also have to agree with Ammar's videos.
Even though these are very simple tricks, they're very effective and if you know all of the tricks by heart (from volume one to six), then you can amaze so many people with yet sooooooo many tricks. So get Ammar's card Miracles Set or get card College, this book is VERY useful. |

There have been many negative remarks about Penguin, its tricks and Oz who performs on many of the video demos.
The only legitimate reasons I can find deal with proper credit given for effects and the notion of selling known effects under a different name and package. The Born To Perform dvd received a bad review in Magic magazine this month (check out Michael Close' points) and though some are based on less than optimal handlings, there are other points which bring up the fact that nothing is new, fresh or innovative as the adverts say. Now, to someone just recently into magic or for someone who focuses on tricks rather than history, many effects today are indeed "new and fresh." Look at the original Blaine show. But, when putting out instructional material it seems that proper research is sometimes skipped over in order to make a deadline. Or, incomplete research that isn't technically wrong, but not technically complete is viewed as passable. I think those are the main reasons Penguin is getting a bad rap. Many of their previous "Instant Downloads" have been taken down indefinitely due to copyright infringement

They are a collection of some of the best card magic in existence, created by the masters. Many older magicians were upset when Ammar released these because it would otherwise take many years of collecting books to get together all of these classic effects. Plus, the title is misleading. While they are not knucklebusting effects, the beginner must still practice them diligently to truly master them.

Go with Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles videos. They are unbelieveable and really gave my whole career a jumpstart years ago. Also, basic card technique by Kauffman is very good too if you're a beginner. I would stay away from anything from Ellusionist...the material is poorly performed and the presentations are NOT engaging. As far as Oz's videos, I know that Mike Close gave him very very poor reviews in the MAGIC magazine this month. Mike Close is just about one of the most incredible thinkers and creators in all of magic as far as I'm concerned. I've seen some of Oz's stuff and I really am not that impressed. He handles stuff well but as far as originality, it's lacking.

Also many of the things Michael Close said about the DVD and marketing on the internet today, could also be true when it comes to sites like Ellusionist. He noted that todays marketing favors style over substance, which I feel is true, especially in the case of Ellusionist products. |

Immortal-
Good catch! Yes, I meant Stealing Pips, which is probably even worse since Stealing Pips seemed to be favored by more who have seen both. Either way, learn where you can and take it all with a grain of salt! I know my wife is getting me Ammars vol1 of ETCM for Christmas and I'm really excited

Nobody has mentioned Kaufman's "Basic card technique" I like this much better than "Born to perform". And if you can afford it: "Daryl's encyclopedia of card sleights"
