Don't hold grudges. Be as forgiving as you can. We live in a world where people can be harsh, or cruel, or sometime evil. Your mental state will directly contribute to your physical health. Try to be happy as best you can.

Get a physical every other year until you are 50, then get one every year. Take your health seriously.
You will have health problems. We all do. But give yourself the best chance to make the most of what nature deals you. John

I do not give money a single thought as my living expenses are so small. Again unlike most others I have zero debt and could care less about a credit rating. Is it for everyone? Nope. The OP asked us to share insights so I did. |

So perhaps the advice should be:
Make sure to plan and save so you can live in the lifestyle you'd like, or are accustom to If you can live a lifestyle that requires little or no money...or if you want to yacht and play golf at exclusive clubs, make sure you plan accordingly.

Try to outright own a place to live as early as possible. My goal is to not be writing a monthly check for a place to live by my late 50's.

Thanks so very much for the insights thus far.
I have not had a physical in years, but I made one yesterday at The VA Hospital. My upper left leg is numb and has been for a week now. My appointment is in two weeks. Saving money has been difficult, because I enjoy many hobbies, animals, and the latest electronic gadgets. When I stopped purchasing the "latest and greatest" magic effect and boy toys, I started to realize an increase in my savings account. I am now trying to discipline myself into better planning for my golden years. I've had mutual growth funds for years, but they sure are sloooooowwwww earners, but that's the point. So there's that. I found out the hard way that the life insurance policy doesn't pay out as fast as required. Many funeral homes won't wait. It is very humbling to ask a family member for some cash because it's hard to liquidate assets overnight. Fortunately, I have some credibility going for me. I like to think that I have found balance in my life, but I'm still learning each day. I spent many weeks visiting with homeless folks on the streets, to find perspective in my life. I had to work pretty hard to gain the trust from the homeless community when I started asking questions about day to day survival etc... I kept a journal of my travels and visits with the homeless communities, which I am putting out as a book in a few months after editing. I have had a few articles on the subject published in my local newspaper, as a freelance writer. I'd love to ask permission from some of you to include your thoughts in it with credit given. I have also considered just posting a link to this thread, in the book with your permission. Please by all means keep sharing your insights. I am learning much. I'm also in awe of many of your life experiences. Thank you from the very bottom of my heart! p.s. The most valuable lesson I learned in my travels, was that of servitude. |

About money and saving ... I think some people tend to neglect or are unaware of how expensive it can be if you live a good long life into your 80s and beyond.
I know of several people in their 80s and 90s living in assisted living nursing homes (typically because their physical condition made it impossible for them to remain in their own home). Some are in the U.S., some are in Canada. Very nice places, but far from luxurious. The cost? Easily $5,000 per month and upwards. E.g., see here: http://www.assistedlivingfacilities.org/......osts.php Care Type National Average Daily Cost National Average Monthly Cost Nursing Home double occupancy room for one person $200 $6,083 Nursing Home single occupancy room for one person $222 $6,753

Take care of your eyes, colon, teeth and feet. That's it.
All the "save money, invest" is nonsense. I knew a cheapskate like that and he died before getting his first SS check . Jesus was broke, so that's good enough for me. |

Keep active.
Brush and floss. Focus on happy memories from the past. Enjoy the present. Listen to your intuitions regarding people and business deals. As you grow older your older friends will need help and support so you will be feeling down about that. This can make you feel older than you are. If you foster some younger friendships it can give you a boost and your experience can help them as well. Remember some of the times you have not lived up to your best self when judging others. Let your interests and enthusiasm lead you freely. Do unto others... -Mary Mowder |

Health is all important, do not take it for granted. I did and it's to late to correct it.
Debt-free, is very comforting. Not having bill is very stress free Politics is unimportant, because it creates stress. People will not change, especially when their mind is jaded. Your best buddy,is your wife (Spouse), enjoy life with her as much as possible. My greatest gifts are: 1. Finding and loving the greatest woman in my world. 2. Not worrying about finances. 3. My grandchildren melt my heart. (My children do too.) 4. Being proud to be a US patriot. 5. Magic had such an impact on my life as a children entertainer.

I'd add Don't follow any one or any organization that preaches selfishness, hatred or greed. If the core belief is wrong, everything that follows probably is, too.
And as for people: "By their works ye shall know them" holds pretty true.
