Ok call me irresponsible but recently I had 8 shows over the weekend at the same venue scheduled about 45 minutes to an hour between performances. So in order to set up my silk opener we had to work fast backstage. On the table where we were loading the silk streamer one of the crew had spilled Coca Cola on the table. You know what happened next, yep some of the spillage got on the streamer. My question is what can I do to get the stain out of the streamer? The streamer is about 50 ft. and I really don't want to wash the streamer. It is regular Coca Cola. I really need some help on this one guys so any help would be appreciated.

You can take it to a good Dry Cleaner, and tell them this is silk and you want it dry cleaned. Rice encyclopedia suggest dry cleaning.
Actually, washing will not hurt, and help it last a little longer by strengthening the fibers. You can use Woolite Detergent in cold water. You will only use a little color. Walmart has a packet they sell to soak up color in the laundry water. I washed egg out of my Rice Streamer, and it turned the water with a mix of all the colors, it did not bleed on the other colors at all. Still looks great, even though it lost some dye in the water. I never tried the stain removers on the market on my silks. |

Bill, is correct in washing the streamer. Put a drop of fabric softner in the rinse to kill static.

That is were I am confused, I used warm water and a lot of color came out. On the Abbott's video of the lady dyeing the Dale Salwak 6 foot silk, she said rather quickly, that she rinses the silk in cold water to prevent the color loss and bleeding. She indicated that the cold sets the color.
Kind of confusing, so I would go for cold, and put a little white vinegar in the was water to also set the color. Amount depends on how large the tube is you are working in. I used my kitchen sink, stainless Steel. So only 2 tablespoons. Maybe Richard can enlighten us more on this, Please. |

I'll be frank, I'm a little leery about washing the whole streamer. It's not I don't trust you guys, I just don't trust myself. Would you recommend washing the whole silk streamer or just the parts soiled?

I would do the whole streamer. When you rinse it, you have a couple of options. The easiest to take it outside and hang on a clothesline or such until it is almost dry. Then Iron it. You can iron the entire streamer when wet but don't let it set for extended time wet against itself as it can transfer color off.
I don't know how your dye was set. When I dye silk, I rinse with cold water until clear. Then I rinse it the hottest tap water I can run (probably 140 degrees or so). Then I rinse again I cold water until clear and iron it. After that there is very, very little future washout. I never understood how Abbott's dyed their silks from that video. The dye is never set. It is more like the fabric is stained with the dye. There are only two ways to set the dye. One is a chemcial reaction with vinegar or soda ash. The other is with heat by steaming or ironing the wet silk. You should be ok washing the silk in color or warm water as I said. Richard

Darkwing, okay, I have to say when I say, "WASH", I really mean soak. Just fill the sink with water and detergent, then place the whole silk into the sink. Let it soak and then take a look at your stain. If it needs a little work. Go very lightly with your fingers or a soft sponge. Stroke lightly in one direction. Do not do anything hard, as this may separate the weave of the silk.
I had only egg on mine, so the soapy water took care of it right away. I don't know about the coloring they put in coke cola. If you don't get it out, the silk will be stiff in that area, thus it will tear easily and develop holes. It is best to clean as best we have explained. |

To Bill and Richard
SUCCESS!!! Thanks to you two kind and very wise gentlemen. Went ahead and washed the whole streamer in the kitchen sink in cold water, Woolite, and a little fabric softener. Did what Bill said to do I just soaked the streamer and then rinsed in cold water. I went ahead and put one of those Shout Color Catchers in the wash and rinse water just to make sure the colors did not run. The cola stain is out. A big thanks to both of you. This is what the Magic Café is all about. David |

David,
Have you tried washing the silk in the bathroom sink with a couple of bottle caps of Johnson's No More Tears Baby Shampoo? I find it to often work when other thing don't. Always use COLD water with silk. Heat sets color! |

Bob,
I got the Coke out with Woolite and cold water. Seems to me I had cake and ice cream on a silk once before (guess how that happened) and I talked with you and used baby shampoo on it. I saw the baby shampoo under the silk the other day and wondered how it got there then I remembered. Thanks for the help Bob. David |
