Makes you wonder if Magnus is too stupid to realize that he spent the last couple pages defending a study done by a non scientist who runs an alarmist blog.

The guys I quote--the actual scientists--aren't saying the doomsday stuff.

Perhaps you should read what I actually wrote, then.

I've explained what Cook's study says, and briefly talked about his methodology. It really has nothing to do with whether human activity is warming the earth. For that, I defer to the scientists.

Good try, though. But you're still not reading.

Once she grasps that deniers do not deny that man made climate change is real she will grasp why the 97% assertion is mere propaganda.

What do you propose to do about it? What will it cost? What are the direct benefits from that cost? And how do you get global compliance?

Big questions that will require a large amount of global cooperation.

The discussions can follow established environmental successes. For example, the Montreal protocol was declared in 1997 with the express goal of eliminating the use of CFCs in order to repair the hole in the ozone layer. By any measure, this agreement (and it's subsequent revisions) has been an outstanding success. What's more, the cost to the global economy was negligible.

The benefits should be clear: the oceans will be more productive, the land temperatures will stabilize, and the arctic regions will return to their traditional climates and ecosystems.

Compliance will be like any other international agreement. A strong agreement with strong controls will be successful. A weak agreement will not be. This is up to the politicians and diplomats to show their will. If the public at large strongly supports action, we will get action. If the divisive forces that are behind the denial movement get their way, governments will not get strong messages.

There is much at stake in establishing the true state of the science.

All pretty vague. I think that is the problem because it seems to want to give those with the propensity to spend ten dollars for every one they have a blank check.

And yes with so many lies and propaganda on both sides establishing credibility is going to be a long road.

That's why negotiations are necessary. The diplomacy should begin with a goal supported by the best evidence.

This is surely no more vague a starting point than any of the hundreds of other international treaties our nations have ratified and have made positive contributions to the world.

What, specifically, is there to negotiate? IE What quid pro quo? think nuclear power politics, fishing, whaling Smile

and this part "establishing the true state of the science." is just to f'n scary to discuss today.

Good grief. I'm thankful that Magnus Eisengrim is taking the laboring oar here, or there would be no sense in this thread whatsoever. I agree with everything he has said in the last few pages, including his answer to Danny Doyle's restatement of my question.

Now, what evidence would it take for climate deniers to believe that man made global warming is occurring, and is dangerous to human economies and life? Anything? Or is there nothing at all because it is a matter of dogma, as I suspect.

The True Science?

What was there to negotiate in terms of trade? Water quality? Trumpeter swan habitat? Nuclear non-proliferation?

Diplomacy is rarely a matter of deciding beforehand all the details of a useful agreement. Yet diplomacy has successfully improved our world with the above examples, to name a few.

Why do you not answer my questions? What evidence would it take for you to change your position at all?

See my point in asking is to show that it is not relevant. Who cares if anyone agree 100%? The right thing is the right thing and if progress happens in spite of people then so be it.

But by the same token blind adherence to ideology is also bad.

So I think if we reframe the debate to just moving forward it is more productive than look at me I am smarter than you.

Also I think giving government a blank check to fix this is a horrific idea. We do need to be smart about this. So much has been a power and money grab. Certainly you can not deny this can you?

"Big questions that will require a large amount of global cooperation. "

When the worlds population lists "Global Climate Change" as the last thing in a long list of things they're worried about, good luck with that.

Exactly like the big business plan which was set up and drafted up actually a long time ago by the richest people on the planet at the time, a hundred years ago.
