How do you suggest arguing for great public expenditure on "cleaner", smaller footprint technology while at the same time honoring the investments and debts owed to those who have vast amounts of money in oil based technology?

? Times change. No more buggy whips as has been said before. Isn't one of capitalism's strengths its push to innovation?

Is it true that the chickens in Finland are now laying hard-boiled eggs?

Interesting to read you as championing capitalism... But didn't we cover this ground with citations to Michael Crichton's "State of Fear" appendix where Crichton argued that free enterprise is more efficient at evolving better technology than government fiats - and that using scare tactics to legitimize public agendas was not in the best interests of our society or ecology?

Not sure why you think I should privilege Crichton's opinion above anybody else's. Strange appeal to authority, IMO.
As for my view of capitalism, I've often said on this board that capitalism has many strengths--even Marx thought so. What it does very well is spurring innovation and accumulating wealth. What it does very poorly is distributing that wealth equitably or providing for the safety and survival for the large mass of society. The "free market" thing is an illusion. Unless you think we should bomb all public bridges, tunnels and highways. How do you think the car got its position of primary importance in our economy? And let's not forget the oil depletion allowances or perhaps we might still be riding horses for transport.

You provided none. Nothing but opinion. Suddenly I have to provide evidence? You're joking right?
First off what makes you believe that capitalism must redistribute wealth equitably? That concept is pure Marx and horse manure. You believe this so it is your measuring stick and it is bunk. I don't buy into the premise that the goal is equal distribution of anything.

It's called 'disability' (diss*ah*bill*ih*tee). All you have to do is hire a lawyer and keep applying. Eventually you get in and then you are on easy street for the rest of your life. I think then you are legally allowed to use those scooters you see at Wal*Mart. Now it is up to the rest of us to work that much harder so that these weary folks can enjoy their daytime programming. Next thing I know you will be asking me is who's John Galt?

So, no, not a free market. Let's see the car companies compete without such infrastructure support paid by tax money. Traffic lights, anybody? I never said capitalism *should* distribute wealth equitably, nor that it was its goal. I said it *can't.* The evidence for that is all around us. Whether societies *should* endeavor to provide the large majority of its members a means to survival, freedom from exploitation, health, education, and pursuit of happiness is, indeed, opinion. We all will have to investigate our own consciences for that.
