Warren, I've been working on a few of my junk coins, both to soften and to remill them. For softening I start with 180 grit sandpaper, then move to 220, and so on, till I'm polishing out tiny blemishes with fine steel wool. The important thing is to ensure the coin is absolutely flat on the paper, and that pressure is applied evenly - and gently. There's a site that outlines a good method for doing this, but I cannot remember the url! This chap uses a small jar lid, just a little larger than the coins you are working, to do the grinding. Place two or tree coins in a stack, with the one you wish to sand on the bottom. Cover with the cap, and without pushing down, move this in broad, slow figure-eight motion across the sand paper.
Be very careful when working with the coarser grades, as it is all too easy to take too much off. It's much easier to grind a little more off, than try to put it back! I just completed work on three copper rounds, and three morgan copies. When slid across each other, they do not make a sound Hope this helps. |

Carpetshark thank you for coming to the rescue the key words being" polishing out tiny blemishes with fine steel wool". You see my coins were looking a bit dull as I hadn't used them for a while so I gave them a bit of a sand down and they seemed to be sticking together....then after hearing the magic words wire wool it all came back to me and now they are tip top and ready to go again happy days

I see that you said you go 180 to 220 how high of a grit do you go before the fine steel wool? Sorry for the late question.

Can always do Nathan Kranzo's Wheat Fly, and you wouldn't have to do all that.

Alternate method: add clear packing tape to one side. As long as it isn't super close up magic, it works fine for silencing without impacting visibility.
Kudos to Levent for this trick on the Miser's Dream DVD. |
