Trailer
I enjoyed the last film, but I was a bit annoyed that it left us hanging. The lush video graphics and scenery were truly marvelous. I look forward to this film. |

I too am looking forward to the film. What I am hoping for however is that the third film - due July 2014 - will draw more from source material covering the span of years between the end of The Hobbit and the beginning of The Lord of the Rings.
Also, being a huge fan of dragons, I am really hopeful that Smaug will look suitably terrifying; dragons tend to look a bit less than legendary in most films. Smaug was one of the most feared and most vicious dragons in Tolkien's lore. I do have to say that I loved how Jackson introduced Smaug in the first movie. You never see Smaug, but wow, the hell he raised! (Yes, I'll say it again, I am a HUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGEEEEEEE fan of dragons)!!!! Namaarie, Vlad |

I'm still wondering why they stretched out The Hobbit to three films, same as the trilogy, when, in fact, it was the shortest of all four of the books.

The first film followed the book pretty closely. I think the real question is, why did they compress TLOTR into only 3 films, when there was so much more material to use. (I particularly missed the Scouring of the Shire.) |

If a picture is worth a thousand words, why is it that I can read The Hobbit in less time than it would take to watch all three parts of the film version?

I have always been a fan of fantasy novels and of Tolkien in particular. I loved reading the Hobbit as a teen and have re-read it many times. Oddly, I was disappointed with the first film. I'm really not even sure why exactly. I can't quite put my finger on it but it left me feeling rather unsatisfied.

I can relate, Paul. I often feel that way when I watch a film version of a favorite book. I think the reason is that the vision we had in our minds when we read the book was simply different from the vision the director had when he made the film.
No film has ever matched the way I imagined the novel when I read it. Sometimes they come close and they are often very good films that I would have enjoyed immensely if I hadn't read the book. Good thoughts, Bob |
