A friend of mine let me borrow his Gary Kurtz video a while ago and I liked this effect a lot. I was thinking of buying the gaffs but I forgot what they were. Does anyone know what and where I can get these gaffs? Thanks

Any "2 Copper 1 Silver" coin set will work for this effect. I have used this for years...it is really great routine!
I hope this helps, Cody S. Fisher

Be careful - a copper/silver/brass set won't work with this routine. BTW - it's an excellent routine! Gary sent me a handwritten set of instructions for this routine around 1980. It almost made it into my first book, Powerful Magic. Gary did contribute an item to the book, but he held onto Trio in Three.

Mike is correct...Like I said...you need a "2 copper 1 silver" coin set.
If you want to perform this routine using a copper/silver/brass coin set you will want to look at Reed McClintock's version or John Schrock's version. They both have really nice handlings of this effect using the CSB coin set. I hope this helps, Cody S. Fisher

Yes Dave that will work. I have been using Gary's routine for ages.
If you are going to learn the routine I'll offer some advice about controlling spectators curious minds. It really is a minor thing but it has made all the difference for me. In the initial phase of loading the coin, instead of placing the cards face down, place them face up. Wandering minds aren't curious about the cards and whether they have changed and they have "forgotten" them at the conclusion. Before when I performed the trick (my patter hasn't changed at all) I would place the cards face down the entire time and had to ward off wandering hands from the cards else they ruin the climax! The simple act of turning the cards over has changed that for me. I have drastically cut the wandering hand syndrome down in my performances. I believe this is due to the subconscious idea that when a magi is done with a trick he turns the cards face up. Any of you other guys who use the routine found this out or is it just me? Jason |

That is a good idea. If I were watching it for the first time I would assume just that if the cards were face up.
By the way thanks for the help. I'm looking forward to using this effect. |

The set is called the Connie Hayden Gimmick and I bought a fresh set right from the magic store.
I saw one on ebay last week as well. When I got the set, it was much different than what I expected. Frank

Jason,
I've found that has happened to me as well. But with Reed's 13 Coin Matrix. The one guy was so sure I was going to change the cards, he ruined the set up of the matrix, (Grabbed a card to look at it, that was fine though, still showed all the extra coins. But I know what you mean about showing cards face up, Will defiantly be trying it when I perform at the restaurant. |

I do, in fact use the c/s/b set. I use a black close up mat. A piece of electric tape and thinking through the routine ahead of time with a few here and there changes in handling will allow for this. Try it out. You just may find that you like it. Personally, I find it more effective to use 3 coins that are obviously different. From a short distance, who can tell the difference between a copper English Penny and a Copper Mexican Centavo?

I think I may be repeating myself here, but I really believe Trio in Three is one of THE top 5 coin coin effects in magic. The routining is perfect, the use of the gaff ingenious and the climax of the trick stunning (how am I doing with the adjectives). I really can't say enough good things about this trick.

Hi Doug, I have your book and I really like the effects in it. Since you feel that way about the above affect, I'm taking your word on it and I'm going to learn it.
By the way, what's the video or book called? thanks |

I HIGHLY doubt it will be remade into a dvd since Gary Kurtz doesn't even do magic anymore. He does a mentalist show and doesn't like being contacted about magic. What a shame. Either way get any material you can from him because it's all great.

I don't think his material is really that popular. The magician's that would value this work the most already have all the videos. BTW, everything of Kurtz is worth getting... I feel like he is the Jimi Hendrix of magic, very innovative.
