Just received this over the weekend. Had a chance to glance at the pdf but still need more time to digest. I can say that this will play very big in the right setting. I say the right setting because Devin mentions using this version in a close-up/small parlour setting, not stage. Basically, as in the original Blindsight- a stack of envelopes are shown to be opaque, four of these envelopes are removed and shown to have a different color card in each. The performer or the spectator can mix up the four cards that contain the color cards before being laid out on the table in which the envelopes clearly have nothing written on them. (One main difference in this handling is the following) the performer says to the spectator a color and asks the spectator which envelope he/she thinks that color is in- and the spectator freely chooses the envelope that he/she thinks contains that color and then SEES the performer actually write the name of the color on the chosen envelope. There is no need for the writing of the color on the chosen envelope to be secret in any way and the performer can and does openly write the color on the spectator's chosen envelope! Further- at the end after all the colors have been written on the envelopes (except for the fourth envelope as there is no need to because three of the four colors were already committed and written on the envelopes), the performer or the spectator opens the first three envelopes that were chosen by the spectator. And each color card inside the envelope matches the written color on the envelope that was chosen by the spectator. There is one envelope left to open that has nothing written on it- but all already know it will be the last color mentioned since all the previously color cards matched the envelopes. Here is where the final kicker comes- inside that envelope is the final color which is obviously correct and a hand written note that states, "I knew you would choose this envelope last"! Note- this is the ONLY envelope that has the hand written note in it! All the other envelopes opened during the reveal are shown to be EMPTY!
As Devin mentions in his instructions- some will prefer one over the other- it's all a matter of preference. Also a matter of venue. But- the necessary steps used to accomplish the OUTDONE version are very easy and very deceptive. I can see how the OUTDONE version could fool even magicians. My thoughts that this is easily worth the asking price. I feel Devin always prices his effects generously and this is no exception. RNK

I did find out that Murphys and Hocus Pocus has this on their pre-sale list.
Also, I have found that some performers are actually doing the effect for a person who is blind. The blind person is given the envelopes and feels them and correctly guesses the colors inside. Doing this will make the person a hero in the eyes of the audience and get that person a lot of applause. Of course, someone next to blind person will have to read the note inside the envelope. This will fit the bill when challenged to do something for a blind person! RNK

I agree this is worth picking up. The original is nice as well but this is very clean all the way. Devin as usual has done some nice thinking on this.

I read the pdf again last night- as usual Devin lays out some great thinking and instructions. All I can say is that I can't wait to use this. Especially in a close-up/group setting. I believe this is going to generate some fantastic reactions! And the best part- which holds true for the other Blindsight versions- it's not just you that has performed some great mental feat but also includes spotlighting the spectator with great Blindsight ability! A win-win situation!

Would this new method be suitable for table hopping?
How are the angles and reset? Can the envelopes be reused? Thanks.

Not the best for table hopping. Use 3 envelopes each time.

I wonder if there are envelopes that could use white board marker, or transparency film markers?

James,
That is exactly what I was thinking. You place a bit of packaging tape on the back of each envelope and that allows you to use dry erase markers on the tape. Wipe it off and you are set to go again.

I tried this idea today and it works. I just put a piece across the entire middle of the envelope and it wipes off fine with an erasable marker. This also solves any problem with ink bleeding. I am updating the direction manual and the next printing will include this tip.

I do like the idea- but I would rather use the envelopes as is and just replace them. I would think a purchase of one big box would last my lifetime of performances. Though the tape would be great for strolling situations. Though- this routine is so strong- I wouldn't want to add anything to the envelopes that may cause suspicion and take away from the ultimate outcome and reactions.
But it is a great idea and for strolling would definitely be beneficial. RNK

The routine now lives up on the fact that everything is written down. But if it works out for you why not. I used to use Poker Tells a lot and really like the new handling. I knew about the main part of it but never thought about linking it all together. Iam quiet satisfied with this and will put it to good use! I guess its also recommended to have another stack of envelopes in your pocket, if you know what I mean... Money, Cards, even real-time Predictions... I am sure you can do a lot more and modify it for your own needs! Thank you Devin. All the best, Martin |

As we all know, Devin has put out a large quantity of effects over the years that vary hugely in quality. You also don’t need me to tell you that his series of Blindsight effects have been incredible.
Devin is one of our few magicians whom can write articulately and with minimal inaccuracies. His plots and structures are very well tested and thought through; Devin is always developing his effects, taking other magicians’ feedback and ideas (Tarot Sight is a perfect example) and letting his creations evolve. And to top it all off, most of his work is very accessible and generously priced. When I read the core method of Outdone I thought “I’ll never get away with that – they’ll be far too much heat!” However, once I read the routine’s structure, I realised how easy the ‘move’ (it’s hardly a ‘move’ at all) is and how well covered by a natural off beat it is. There is a ‘but’, however. As previously stated in other posts above, the participant holds the four envelopes and is asked to hand over the envelope that they believe contains the green, then red, then blue piece of card and are left holding the envelope that they believe contains the yellow card. Just to be clear, it is the performer who decides which order the colours (I’ve included the ‘u’ because I’m British) are handed over – and therefore decides that the last envelope is the one that should contain the yellow card. So when the participant eventually opens the fourth envelope and it contains the yellow card, why on earth should we logically be impressed that it also contains a note that says “I knew this envelope would be your last choice?” It was the performer who chose the envelope containing the yellow card to be last, not the participant. Yes, you end cleaner than in the last Blindsight version, but surly those m******* o*** were stronger and more inexplicable!? Thankfully, I can combine the best of both versions. Thank you, Devin, for your brilliant brain! |

Some of you are missing the point. I have used this ending for years and it is a KILLER with the note. Sure the performer calls out the colors but he has NO idea which envelope the person will give him. In the participant's mind, he could have given him the envelope that contained the yellow card and note when the performer said "give me the envelope you think contains green." In the person's mind, had he done that the ending would have failed. You need only try this in real life to see just how devastating this is in the participant's mind. The original Blindsight is great but this get a far better reaction.
Again, remember the performer HAS NO control over which envelopes the person hands him, so the note is a knock out ending. I always say before the person opens the last envelope. "Remember, YOU COULD have given me that envelope first, but you didn't. You kept that for last and no one could have know which one you would keep for last." This line drives home the point and really sell the prediction. |

Yes, you are calling out the colors but The Spectator is picking the envelope. In the spectators mind the last envelope they saved could have been the 1 that they originally were going to hand over first but didn't, and will remember this at the end of the performance. Still making this a miracle in their mind. RNK
