First Darwin Ortiz and now Allan Ackerman...It's everything a card working could dream of!
If you are not a card man, just to watch how talented he is makes it worth it. ~Steve |

If his work at Magic Live is a hint of what's to come at this lecture, I'll pass. Obscure moves, out of context, assuming a high-level of ability to begin with. Nice guy though.

His lecture at the International Convention a few years back was outstanding! It was full of straightforward, powerful, commercial routines.
I'm looking forward to this. Iain, |

Along with Harry Lorayne and Bill Malone, IMO Ackerman is one of the best Card Magic teachers I've ever seen.

He's a brilliant card man. I saw his lecture about 15 years ago and learned a lot from him. And yes, he's also a nice guy.

I'm glad to hear that others believe him to be astounding. His utility move instruction at Magic Live left a bad taste in my mouth, but to hear that his lectures are usually more straightforward and commercial- I may just have to give it another shot.

I saw him at what was my first magic live as well. I just don't think those short rotating sessions a r e a good way to learn or teach. I have his DVDs. They are quite old but good. He is a technical kind of card guy. Don't know how this lecture will be but I wouldn't let magic live put you off.

His two A-1 videos from years ago are awesome. Yes, he is an amazing technician but also creates some very commercial magic as well. Should be an EXCELLENT lecture.

Anyone else have a deer caught in the headlights look during lecture? I kept watching waiting to see "the moment" when he'd do the work and I could see nothing. Then he'd tip the work and I was stunned. The subtitles he taught from Charlie MIller, Dai Vernon, Ed Marlo, Allan himself and others will vastly improve what we already do.
He was doing ( and teaching ) passes that looked like nothing happened. The "A Cull for RB" ( Rafael Benatar ) and the Oil and Water was worth the price of the lecture ( IMHO ). I do a marketed, full deck , gaff version of oil and water. Allan's version looks virtually the same, but it's clean. He had Jakob ( another great job participating ) riffle shuffle the deck. Allan took out 4 red cards, 4 black and did an O&W that was so fair looking, the outcome looked like it had to be gaffed ( from my perspective ). He then spread the shuffled deck face up and the blacks and reds were separated. I caught myself shaking my head. I'm done carrying the marketed version ( and I love using gaff decks ). Allan's a fountain of knowledge of crediting. The people, the books, the magazine issue and the year, etc. I think learning the crediting is as interesting/important as the work. It's an essential part of the hobby to know those that came before and what they contributed. 3 1/2 hrs. long and during the Q&A, Alan kept teaching. A+++ all the way! |

As mostly a card guy, I really loved Allan's lecture. Such amazing and incredibly fooling effects and technique, which he also teaches very well (though, yes, a lot of it will take quite a bit of practice). And then he tells us he's just a magic hobbyist?!! Oh, and Allan is also a walking encyclopedia of card magic, able to recall countless effects, methods and creators, and not only what magazine but also what year and month a particular effect appeared in--from the 1970s! I almost expected him to mention the page number. His crediting is impeccable, as ZM has pointed out.
All in all, this was yet another lecture to watch again and again. If you're into card magic at all, I'd highly recommend it. Great job as usual by Dan as well--he even got Allan to do a coin trick. |

Not being Michael Skinner or Bill Malone, I'm not able to have dozens, if not hundreds, of card tricks I can do. So right now I'm swapping out two from Allan's lecture. The oil and water routine he taught for the gaff version I've used for years. On a scale from 1-10, the gaff version is around an 8. It loses a couple of points because it's a gaff deck that I have to dedicate just to the trick. That's not a bad thing as I love gaffs/gaff decks, but I just try to be realistic about grading something for my use. Allan's I give a strong 9 as there are no gaffs and the audience member shuffles the deck. Allan's The World's Greatest Card Cheat will replace my treasured Vernon Poker Deal. In Alan's, you teach them how to be the world's greatest card cheat. They choose a card and it's placed up their sleeve. Then they cut the deck ( this completely threw me off as you don't split the deck first ). They turn one half face up and riffle shuffle face down into face up. They choose how many are in the game and start dealing. So some cards are face up and some face down. They get to play poker cheat and slip themselves the sleeved card. The ending is that they will have a straight flush, but not even you will know exactly what kind of flush. I give it a strong 8. At the end you have to straighten the face up/face down cards. You can do it quickly, but you still have to do it. Do you use Bill Simon's Business Card Prophecy move? Allan does it with a playing card ( you lucky card or a joker ). They can stick the card anywhere, not just the middle and here's no discrepency. They stick it on the left side? The chosen card(s) will be found and the card they stuck in the pack is still where they placed it ( left, middle or right side ). I'm glad he taught ti because I rewound 3 times and still couldn't catch it. 3 a.m. and I'm still watching. It's one of the all time best lectures I've seen and I'm including ones over the years I've attended. Your card magic will improve dramatically. Not just with tricks, but simple techniques that will make your card work look more convincing. |
