It never made sense to me. Guns sole purpose is for protection by force or a deterrent of force, can't imagine anyone hunting in the cities with them nowadays.
Nothing wrong with that with me as I am pro legal gun ownership and carry. People should be able to protect themselves and others within the law. The gun is just a tool. The knife is also a tool, moreso imho... Thus, my absolute confusion as to why carrying a knife for protection is illegal. Most cities only give a leeway of 3 inches for pocket knives to be carried IF you can justify its use within your line of work. Why not just allow bigger ones that could be used for protection and proper survival situations? For one, it is a real tool, just ask any camper, survivalist, Boy Scout or Soldier. It also, realistically, cannot be used to inflict multiple casualties as easily as a firearm could. All kitchens in the world have big knives, it would be strange if they didn't. You don't freak out if you're in someone's kitchen, do you? There was a time not so long ago when everyone carried a knife, in almost all cultures. Not really to fight but as a tool for everyday chores. The detterence would not have been a bad thing, especially for women who are alone in public. Not to beat a dead horse, but criminals don't give a hoot about the laws (that's why they're criminals ) and the knife is still the weapon of choice as it is easy to get, cheap and highly concealable. Why not level the playing field? So why the outlawing of knife carry for protection, you think?

Pakar, remember that most of the people who post here are Americans.
Knives are not protected by the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution. That's your answer. |

In Elizabethan times, when everybody did indeed carry daggers, (rather large knives), there was a bit of a problem with rowdy young men stabbing each other of an evening. That sort of problem may be the reason?
Incidentally, it's the weapon of choice for most kids around where I live, and they usually take the largest kitchen knife available to them. |

What about nunchaku? They are illegal in Germany. How about Malaysia?
(Of course, I have a legal, foam rubber version for pretending to be Bruce Lee. But I don't carry them in my backpack for protection.) |

The reason why we never discuss knives is because a knife fight requires courage, and any coward can use a gun.

And you'd likely be disarmed and stabbed with your own blade.

If George Zimmerman had a knife he would have died in a knife fight last year.

Why doesn't that rule apply to your attacker as well? An angry chimpanzee with a knife can kill you. Try this in a Martial Arts class, give a large red colour marker pen to any student and offer him a hundred bucks if he can just tag you clearly on your body with the marker pen three times. The reason to try this in a Martial Arts class is because of safety. There usually are good body pads you can wear in such classes. Prepare a hundred bucks. The fact is, while it is not impossible to disarm a knife wielding attacker, it is really really difficult. Almost impossible to do it without getting cut first. Check out youtube for these all out attack simulations, not the fancy schmancy Martial Arts demo that is prearranged. When everyone has a knife, people are a bit more wary of attacking anyone. You might get one guy, but you know you'd be overwhelmed by the armed crowd.

The thing is, in the more rural parts of my country and most countries I imagine, the folks do wear knives openly. Especially the ones who do a lot of hunting, trapping and such...
Yet you don't hear hundreds of people killing each other in knife fights in the villages, outbacks and back country. I'm sure there are cases but in big cities, more criminals stab people I believe.

"Arms" is short for "armaments," which is defined as "weapons and supplies of war with which a military unit is equipped." So, in reality, "the people" were meant to have the right to arm themselves with everything that the state could arm a military with for war. So, by the second amendment, the private citizen SHOULD be free to own nuclear weapons, and knives

Not trying to start a "blame the government" thing, I'm genuinely curious about it. Would anyone private individual have had the means, and the reasons, to try and develop it? Why would anyone outside of a government pursue that initially? I can certainly see how private individuals, now that the cat is out of the bag, could procure the materials, and have means to do so, and the "motivation" to as well, but if governments had never went down the a-bomb path, would we have ever gotten there? Would anyone have ever even "wanted," or had a "need" to head there?
