I was going to purchase the vanishing pen at Dave Powell's site to compare it with the Sansmind pen until I saw that the regular and lowest shipping rate to NY would be $7.95. $7.95 shipping for a pen?

Sans mind uses David powells pens they just buy in bulk from him. As far as the shipping if you send David an email he will ship the pens first class and it will not cost you the 7.00 shipping. He will ship you 2 pens for 23.00 and that includes the shipping. Just contact him from the link on his site. Sans mind is way overcharging for powells pen and an 8 minute DVD. Buy the pens from david Powell and figure it out on your own.

They look totally different. Powell's pens are black and Sansmind are blue. Also, Sansmind pens are silicone tubing not shrink tube.

Silicone is washable and will not fade. the shrink tubing gets dirty and will bend and crease. The silicone tubing will also be a little easier to handle because it is a little stiffer than the shrink tube.
Buying from Powell, then using Murphy's to sell? That would be ridiculous. What is their profit point, a dollar per set? Please. James Quote: On 2013-12-25 19:21, magicinsight wrote:

James,
Thak you very much for your most helpful information. I appreciate it. I can therefore see that the price of the Sansmind pen is more justifiable. Michael

Guys I am fully warning about purchasing David Powell's vanishing pen I received mine yesterday I was so excited and when I opened the box all I could see is that I received a box of crap. This is the worst gimmick I have ever seen the print on the pens looked like some one took a rubber stamp and stamped it on there and only getting half the print on there and the gimmick, the gimmick is not even close and I will say that again it is not close to the quality of sandsmind's. The gimmick is very thin and has a warped look to it because the material used you can tell it will not bounce back straight leaving you with bent looking gimmick it is truly horrible looking. The cap used on both the gimmick and non gimmicked pen is not the cap used on a bic medium round pen neither is the back cap the Same it is bulbus looking and is not flat like the bic medium round pen. The way I judge a gimmick is that it has to fool me in the mirror before I will show it to a spectator and I can tell you this that for this to pass for a real bic medium round pen the spectator will have to be blind and a retard and the is still a 50% chance you will get called out on it. I was so hoping this would be the standard and quality of sandsmind's vanishing pen because I wanted to use this to add another layer to Greg Wilson's pointless and sky cap I wish sandsmind or someone would make a bic medium round vanishing pen to the quality and standard the magician needs it to be because there are a lot of trick pens that are made from the bic. Anyhow I will stop ranting. All I know is who ever starts producing a bic medium round black vanishing pen with the quality of sandsmind's pen will sale a lot of them. The product that David Powell just sent me is a joke and will not pass.

If you ask sans mind for a replacement pen they will direct you to David Powell. It is the same pen.

I don't get the complaints being posted. Everyone on the Café insist they need a DVD to learn a trick. A DVD cost hundreds of dollars to produce and all the creative graphics even adds to the cost. So why do you think $30 is to much for a Vanishing Pen, you are paying for the DVD that all of you insist on. This trick cost $3 back in the 1970's, and that was expensive at the time.
The comment about using a newspaper to vanish the pen, look up the Tarbell Cone or cornucopia. Now I read complaints about postage. Postage is very expensive and as of the 1st of the year is going up again. So it will cost a lot more then $7 to mail. I would be nice if dealers would just agree to throw a item in a envelope and take you chances if it gets broke, but they don't. |

Magicbyswh I own both and I promise you that quality of sandsmind's pen is 100 times better the pen cap for David's gimmicked pen will not even stay on it. That's because the gimmicked pen is so thin the pen cap just falls off of it. The material used to make sandsmind's gimmicked pen is far more superior to the material used in David's. I got David's in the mail yesterday and it look something out of a bubble gum machine for 25 cents. I will happily pay 30$ for sandsmind's pen just wish they would make a bic version.

Interesting. I just received a nice bubble wrap envelope that would have protected such pen very nicely. Postage- $2.24
On another point- There seems to be quite the conflicting info about these pens.

I own Sansmind vanishing pen and it is excellent quality. You can stare straight at it and it looks exactly like a rigid pen.
I owned Dave Powell's gimmicked pen a few years ago and it is NOT like a pen. It is off white, gets dirty and will crease. Why? Material quality. Sansmind vanishing pen will last for years, never get dirty and will retain it's shape. So many routines to use. No decision here. Sansmind wins. James

I'm disappointed with Dave Powell pen... money went down the drain
like James says: get's dirty and WILL CREASE!! this is a complete bad joke - if it creases you could always make one for yourself everytime you want to perform with a plastic sheet and that's why this is a complete non sense gimmick!!!! the cap even doesn't fit lol COMPLETE TRASH now waiting for Sansmind Pen - this guys are doing good things! |

For everyone asking about a sharpie version:
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S17235 Its not like the vanishing pen principle (from what I can see) but it might be able to hold you off until a "Vanishing Sharpie" is released... |

I must say, the gimmick is something I wasn't expecting - my thoughts were more mechanical.
Its almost silly, but the gimmick is devious. I like the idea of using the pen to write "GONE" before vanishing it, putting the frosting on the cake to show the spec one last time that its a real pen. I wish they went into more detail on the explanation, but I guess its kind of self explanatory, but a more in depth view with the handling would be nice. Haven't tried this in the real world yet, but Im thinking about bringing it out for a test run this weekend. |
