I'm looking for a really strong ending for a ring and rope routine...I have a several phased routine but feel I don't have a dramatic enough ending...Any advice please?

Have you seen David Williamson's ring and rope routine. He has an excellent ending.

Phil Willmarth wrote a BOOK on ring and rope. MAGIC INC. published it. It's good.

One of "our" café regulars published a LIST of sources that took two or three pages to scroll through. It should be in THIS FORUM. Look back to last spring.

If I run across his post, I'll post it here.

One caution::: We magicians very often get "caught up" in variation upon variation! Always remember that the object is to ENTERTAIN, not just "demonstrate" how many ways that we know "how to get a ring on or off a rope!".

It is very easy to "earn" the "CHINESE BILLING" (ONN TU LONG)!

Lawrence O (Paris France) contributed a bibliography list that filled five screens.

It was the most complete list that I've ever seen on a specific routine!

Just scroll down to April 30 and have fun.

With a finger ring, end with it on the wine glass stem. But if you are using a larger ring there are several ways to conclude. I like AldoColombini's routine that ends with a ring on a tied rope coming loose. But I have been playing with the idea of using the knot from ungimmicked linking ropes to cause the ring to pass through a knot that can then be untied by a spectator.

Not just the usual trick; p 465 Pretty Bauble Minoe This is one of those seemingly impromptu effects which can, in the hands of a capable performer, rival the famed and classical ring on the wand trick which has been in the repertoire of the world's best known sleight-of-hand artists. The performer shows a knotted loop of cord or narrow silk ribbon upon which a finger ring is already strung. A spectator unties the knots and removes the ring. Then he reties the ends of the cord or ribbon but without the ring which he hands to the performer. The spectator holds the knotted ends of the cord and almost instantly the ring is caused to pass back upon the cord. Everything is left with the spectator. The cord or ribbon is from 2 to 3 yards in length. Secure two fingers rings, exactly alike, which have a stone setting and which fit loosely over your third finger. String both of these on the cord and tie knots to form a loop. When the cord is displayed with a ring hanging on it the other ring is being worn on the third finger of the right hand with the stone turned inside towards palm. The fingers are kept curled. You hold the loop before you in both hands with the knots uppermost and the loop downward with ring hanging on it. The cord passes through the ring worn on the right hand, which, from back of hand. appears slain and attracts no attention. The knots are untied and the spectator removes the ring from the left (your left) end of the cord. You take it in your left fingers and ask him to retie the knots. Now there are several ways a performer may finish the effect. It can be done without covering by slipping out of the ring you are wearing and putting in its place the one given you, of course, with the stone turned inside hand. It is a bold move but the length of the loop plus the misdirection of the spectator tieing the knots sakes it possible. The alternative is to have someone throw a handkerchief or napkin over the hands for the operation. The effect is exceptionally good for night club table work because it requires so little preparation and no “refills” or bulky apparatus. (Note by Annemann: Why not have a long loop and while spectator holds reknotted ends put the loop over your head, turn your back, get the ring on and then turn around?)

Bagshawe, Edward: Threading the disk in Novel Mysteries Part Three. Original Pocket Effects p 112 The trick predates the Jardine Ellis ring routine and features a dark hexagonally cut piece of cardboard showing boxed zodiacal signs in a circle around its face and back. The hexagon has a fairly large hole cut into its centre. The effect is achieved thanks to a partial shell which is placed over the bottom of the hexagon. When a ribbon is placed over the disk, adding the shell makes it look like the ribbon has been threaded through the central hole. Dr Maxxam used a similar principle for his (now forgotten) linking ring routine. Interesting and original, the routine can include additional effects with moves invented later.

Barnowsky, Larry: Comedy Rope and Ring in Kingdom of the Red. Wedding Ring Redux and (Ch. 3) Comedy Rope and Ring: This routine combines some great ring and rope work with a logical and funny script. The props include the rope, 3 inch ring, blindfold, bell, and handcuffs. There are some well known moves and some original ones. The handcuff finale is really original. The routine is done initially solo and then you work with two spectators until the end. The moves are explained very clearly in the book but Larry shows them with different angles on the DVD. Excellent: a worker’s routine.

Baumann, Fred C.: Steal Ring Apocalypse Vol 8 N° 6 June 1985 by Harry Lorayne p 1076 A finger ring tied up in a knot on a rope magically gets off the rope which remains only with the knot securely tied. This technique placed before performing the Clifton Move will throw off every magician in the know.

Brooks, Robert: Ring Through Rope and Ring Strip; in Apocalypse Vol 3 N° 10 © 0ctobre 1980 by Harry Lorayne p 399 is a very thoroughly studied deceptive illusion for a finger ring and regular string. Aborrowed signet ring is threaded convincingly on the rope and shown to be threaded. It then escapes, without suspicious move: a solid method not as convincing if adapting it to involve a harness ring or a Jardine Ellis ring.

The old effect where a coin with a hole attached to a string retains the other similarly bored ones to fall from a lopped string BUT the lower coin is not attached but threaded in the loop making the feat seemingly impossible. Very smart and forgotten.

The visible ring is then flipped in the hand to be held in Edge Grip. A smart sequence using an secret additional ring. Could be done at a distance with a Jardine Ellis ring. Dan Garrett’s Faustus ring would be a logically adapted follow up.

James, Stewart: Sefalaljia The Jinx issue #69 © Dec 2, 1939: is a close-up one man spirit cabinet routine developed by Stewart James: the name comes from the way the word Cephalalgia (medical term for a big headache) is pronounced but the "C" was changed to "S" and the "G" to "J" (Stewart James initials). This small spirit cabinet includes Ring On The Tape: In each end of the box is a hole. In the center of the hinged lid is a screw-hook on the under side. A length of white cotton tape is folded in half and another spectator places a safety-pin through the tape about an inch from the doubled end. The tape is now threaded through the box with the ends protruding out of the holes. Someone in the audience lends a finger ring and it is hung onto the hook inside the box which is turned with curtain side away from audience. A volunteer grasps one end of the tape and draws it from the box. The borrowed ring is now threaded on the middle of the place by the pin. The cut out pieces are replaced in the hand of the performer and the shoe lace stretched between spectators’ hands. The shoe lace is restored. This effect and practical method can come handy in the middle of a finger ring or harness ring routine.

Lambie, Allan: Rope and Rings – Allan Lambie's Method in The Magigram Vol 1, N° 3 © January-February, 1967, Supreme Magic. The idea is to have a continuous loop of rope hang a ring into the double strand, thread a slightly smaller ring over the hanging ring to prevent its escape. Place the fingers of each hand in each of the end loops. Bring the hands together, sneaking the fingers of one hand into the other loop and r elease one end. Let it go free and at the same time, pull both hands quickly apart. Both rings fall free from the rope, which you are now holding stretched out between both your hands (as in the loop of rope through neck illusion). As a preparation, Allan Lambie suggests to use a loop without tying it with a knot, simply bringing the two ends together and shove one end into the core of the other so it makes a flush join, then sew them together. This is to avoid the knot to interfere with the method. Yet using a sliding false knot (with two small ends sticking out) would give more credibility to the loop and act as a convincer in the deception since the knot can be made to remain (after sliding) into the same hand that it was before the escape of the rings.

Hands are reversed bringing the rope to a vertical position ... but the bangle stops in position ... it goes..., it stops, ... merely at your command. Next the bangle rises up the rope. Then the rope spookily becomes animated and unthreads itself from it. Finally a miracle penetration occurs. A lot of effects: good, clean, visual magic! Two spectators assist: they examine the bangle .... they examine the rope... then hold it stretched between them. The magician throws a cloth over the centre of the rope, places the bangle underneath, makes a few quick manipulations and shows that not only is the bangle genuinely threaded on the rope, but he has also succeeded in tying it there. Now says the Magician comes the hard part... getting the bangle off the rope. This he does ... so simply, by merely cutting the rope, allowing the bangle to fall free! But now of course he is left with two pieces of rope. However, being a real magician, all is put right, and magically the rope is restored into one long piece again

The scissors are threaded on a doubled up rope and very cleanly (but quickly) tied in the rope and yet they fall right through. Vergilio, Ron: Offring © 1976 manuscript: A borrowed ring with length of rope. A spectator threads the ring onto the rope himself. He places the ring on the performer‘s open palm. The performer closes his hand and turns it over. You ask the spectator to take the end of the rope, one end in each hand (You do not hand the ends to the spectators). Spectators stretch the ropes out and the performer places the ring in his other hand which then places the performer‘s hand under the rope. The performer slides his hand back and forth a few inches while pulling down slightly. He then releases the rope and slowly open his hand. The ring is off the rope and in his palm.

End a ring and Rope routine with your words, using tonal inflection and emphasis on the moment of the last release.

Nest Of Wallets is also a good choice, I use them with my Ellis Ring routine that vanishes for the finale from a finger ring box and found in the Nest Of Wallets.

This is a hilarious thread Pegasusowl asks a vague wide open question that there is no easy answer for, and Lawrence answers this vague (please do all the work for me) question with an avalanche of information. I'm sure Mr Pegasusowl is rightfully and totally confused. LOL

Gary Jones in his superb Lecture DVD has taken up the great effect where as he is trying to link the small size of Chinese ring on the lace, the lace actually gets through his wrist watch band. Quite a show stopper

Jay Scott Berry has a nice spinning ring ending with a harness ring (and you can perform it with a silk ribbon and a wedding band)
